I agree with jdh. A "backyard breeder" is anyone who breeds in their backyard! Reguardless if you show or title your dogs. It's not brain surgery. LOL Alot of what people wrote is my picture of a "puppy mill"

Ok Janette so any breeder who's kennel and home are on the same property is a BYB? I think even the big name kennels started their places small and added more kennels as they grew, right behind their house. This would make BYB=just any breeder, pretty much. Meaning BYB is not a slanderous name given to anyone. Thats my take on what your saying anyway.

Thats what I mean. Take it for what it is.Why must we always try to analize everything. Just keep it simple.

Just trying to find out why it is used in a negative manner, when in fact your right. I bet close to 90% of breeders are in fact BYB's. I don't like the term used in a negative way.

If you want a well breed dog then do your homework. Check out who you are going to purchase from. If you like what they are doing and what you see then go for it. When you are buying a living creature there are really no guarentees its going to turn out the way you want it to. Even if the parents are titled up the kazoo and have every health clearance known to man. It's a gamble.I just dont get it sometimes. All the name calling and slander. Something goes wrong with a pup you sold ,make it right. Its about character and customer service which alot of people are lacking these days. And try to help people work through a problem and listen to what they are saying. Even the biggest kennels lack in that department.

Janette, Excellent Post !!!! Customer Service, "stand behind your work" so to speak. Listening to what people really want instead of talking them into something they just can not handle !! Excellent Excellent Remarks, my hats off to ya. :-)

There can be several different diffinitions for the same word or term, ie: Bad. Somtimes it means good, in American slang. My point being that it is not the location where the breeding or puppy rearing takes place, it is the intentions, preparations and the initial stock used in the breeding. If you have one male and one female GSD's, whom you have x-rayed (with good results), wormed, vacinated, fed properly, etc., and their pedigree is average or above average (as GSD's go), in the areas of lineage and compatibility, and you have three litters of pups from them over a three year period, and you discriminate to who is allowed to purchase you pups, with support and follow-up on said pups after they leave your home, with a standard guarantee (one year hip guarantee, etc.), then are you a Back Yard Breeder, as the term is commonly used (meaning someone who just has litters for cash without caring about the quality of the pups or who buys the pups)? Notice, I did not mention any Titles or Tests. What are the opinions about this?

DR&FNO: That's very close to what I think too. I would just add that a BYB doesn't have even a rudimentary knowledge of genetics or GSD bloodlines, and why you mix different lines. I sure don't and that's why I would never be so irresponsible as to start breeding. To me, the term BYB absolutely has negative connotations, but does not apply to every small breeder. Maybe we need to use different terminology to acknowledge those that have a small "backyard" setup, but are in no way BYB's. I don't like the term "boutique breeders", I associate that with "designer dog breeders". How about we refer to them as "micro breeders" like the "micro brewers" who are very respected in their field?

Well, well I have to say I am a front yard breeder how about that like we say in Dansk I am better then you. I am doing it because I like it and my clients are loving it they are telling everyone that I have a kennel right smack in my front yard and my GSD's are from a high 100% great bloodline from all over EU. Beat that oh no I mean analyze that until you all fall a sleep only in America can something like this be plucked apart wow all those experts can get you out of the hole.Hehehe Maxin
