Centurian,

I actually recall a TV documentary I watched that dealt with the topic of dogs' anticipation of arrival of the owner. How they understand the passage of time relating to circadian rhythm was part of the conclusion. It is one tool in their toolbox they use to predict the passage of time, I do agree. This link provided is interesting reading for the curious.

The skunk triangulation strategy does not surprise me, either, as their eye placement and pack drives must surely help them coordinate a best case for winning scenario. Your training and their trust in your leadership paid off for you, too. My singular younger dog Beau, was not so fortunate this recent fall. Hopefully he will have learned from his smelly and painful encounter, for all of our family's sake.

Hundmutter,

I would have thought you hit the brakes hard at "pseudoscience", no looking back! And now to know you keep a metaphysical open mind, is well, news to me!

Sunsilver, when it comes to Beau, you might be closest to the truth. I always say between my two, he's the brawn and Mojo's the brain.

There are several observable phenomena that have not yet been explained. A few years ago in a graduate geophysics class , one of my colleagues demonstrated a peculiar ability. He is able to hold a metal rod in his hand and by walking across a surface he could trace buried metal pipes. The professor at the time mentioned that there is a hypothesis of some type of signalling called noetic waves, but thats where he stopped. The thing is the guy was able to find the pipes right on the money.

When I was studying bones that had been excavated from an archaeological site, our professor said the man who had supervised the dig knew someone with psychic abilities. He'd been able to describe the site in detail, and what he said was proven correct when they did the actual dig.

At one location, he stopped and said, "There's something buried here that's connected with the white man."

The diggers went to work and found the bones of a horse in that exact spot. The owner of the farm said they belonged to a horse he'd had to euthanize.

Yeah and every double blind or triple blind study ever done shows no difference between diviners and random chance.

Drink, drink the Koolaid.

Interesting thread. Before we go on to discuss our dogs. Let's take one moment to take a look at ourselves. We continue to discover capabilities within ourselves that we've never understood. One fact is that we only use 10 to 20% of our brain and what would our lives be like in our capabilities if we were to use a minimum of 80% of our brain. Currently humans have the capability of influencing such things as a coin toss with the use of their mind. Years ago the CIA had done many psychological experiments including astral projection..We don't even fully understand ourselves let alone our dogs!!!

We also have discovered many capabilities in animals such as sonar and Geo magnetic compassing. Who knows ,. perhaps animals have the ability to perceive things inter- dimensionally as some have recently proposed. Some animals perceive different wavelengths of light , compared to us. Animals have many different capabilities compared to humans.

Something that I have found to have existed through the years among many people training dogs is the fact that they are stuck in the old ways and that they still perceive our dogs as simple creatures. However dogs / animals are not so simplistic !!. And I would say to those that disagree : you can't predict an earthquake, yet in China canines seem to have no problem. So who is more simplistic in whose eyes. Our dogs are in tune to even the dilation of one's eyes, the change of one's breath, the sound and type of one's footsteps. Yet a human has to consciously put their attention onto those things and purposely take notice to perceive the changes. So again I believe people should take a good hard look at the way we understand dogs because I don't think this so simple as we once thought.
