I think the question is how can you psychically read in the idea that he needs a real PPD I don't know what he needs hence the word discuss comprehension.... I'm not sure if you ever seen the prices of a real PPD dog currently and perhaps he does need that it's hard to say from a quick blog but if he has 4 - 10000 then perhaps he would have asked for that I don't know I'll leave the psychic dog placement two other experts

by hntrjmpr434 on 25 March 2016 - 18:03

Let see.....
LEO starting night shifts that lives in bad neighborhood.
He also stated he wants a dog to protect his family.
Being a LEO, it is safe to say his judgement of what a bad neighborhood is pretty accurate.
Sooooo, gambling on a puppy and waiting approx 18 months for it to mature does not seem like the best fit for this guy.
Protect his family= a dog that will bite. Like carrying a gun, whats the point if you have no ammo?

I never said anything about a currently fully trained PPD. But an adult dog 12-24 months, possibly sport washout from a higher level handler would definitely be a better option. A dog that has been taught to bark, possibly bite, probably has some obedience...wouldn't run that much more than a puppy. Possibly a breeding prospect wash out. But a dog that even if all the person needs is a deterrent, currently has some substance and is able to step in quite soon to deter people from doing anything.

Gigante...are you in the United States?

OP...where are you located? Maybe people have some local connections they can point you towards.

Once again alphabet soup comprehension... Op stated works for law enforcement I'm not sure where the magical two year number keeps flying in from but I have placed many many dogs that will provide very good family protection at much younger ages much younger again without knowing what is truly needed it's really unknown so put your hardon away and hopefully we'll get more information for what the needs are and then instead of the psychic dog placement you two are throwing around we can work off real information

^says the guy trying to sell a puppy to a guy wanting a dog to protect his family.
Put hard on away? Sorry wrong gender bud.

I am in the u.s. Bavarian and yes an older dog with some training could also be ideal again we'll just have to wait and see if the op has more info if they can get past this silliness of where this thread is being forced into

by alaniz19 on 25 March 2016 - 19:03

both of yalls opinions are on point i want a puppy but it makes no sense when i need the protection now i dont want a 4 to 10000 dollar dog because i cant afford that if i can get a dog anywhere from a year to 3 years with some training i would be happy. the reason i put that on this forum is because i have been calling breeders for a year and all of them r honest and saying their dogs have been raised as outside dogs and i dont want that i need a dog thats been inside potty trained at the least and i can handle the training from there.

hntr434 and BW - correct advice.

In my experience many breeders jump on the Protection dog band wagon, without showing there breeding stock - actually protecting.

My advice to the op would be if you do go down the young adult road - try and converse/meet/breeders who are competing in PSA or will at the very least allow you to see there breeding stock in action. (muzzle attacks and covert leg sleeve bites )

You mention a wife and kids - goes without saying, any adult dog you bring over your threshold, first and foremost must be balanced and not a biting basket case - seriously be careful what you wish for, and even more careful who you deal with lol.

On a different note here are a couple of vids of a young future breeding bitch from my UK kennel - Darkvakia. (This girl is NOT for sale)

Bertha is just starting out on her muzzle attack work, she has a long way to go, but is ticking boxes at 17 months old, and clearly demonstrating a genuine civil interest in the bad guy, as opposed to equipment. (The decoy is wearing no visual trigger ie sleeve/bite suit)

Good luck.
