Reliya

@Hundmutter: While it is true that I did get (very) carried away, I was trying to answer your question "do people talk to one another" over here. The majority of breeders are pet breeders. The person I got my dog from had a one-off accidental litter, but there are others who have breeding as a business that don't care half as much as he did about where the puppies go to.

I think it's because most people see a puppy, think it's cute, and they're going to get it regardless of if he's the strongest pup in the litter or not. They don't care about temperament. I see people say how big the dog will get, usually, or how the dog will look pretty when they're older. I've even seen people say that they'd rather get a puppy from a puppy mill than to deal with all the questions a good breeder puts them through, the contracts, etc. They think that if they're spending the money, they should be able to do whatever they want with the dog.

But I'm sorry. I thought you meant breeders here as a whole, to which I'd say a large portion are byb so I spoke on the majority, and not the actual reputable breeders who go through the trouble of properly rearing, placing, etc. I'd say they're very few in number here in America.

@Beetree: Close! Mississippi. Short drive from Memphis... So you know how that is. :( They just pulled a body from the river yesterday.

Reliya - ah! gotcha - now I understand what you were trying to get across, better. Yes, there are a great many 'breeders' of dogs, not just in the US, who don't really deserve the 'title', being more accidentalists / seekers of new sources of income without thinking it through / dog 'lovers' who just wanna let nature take its course - and so on. Really in the face of modern medicine, letting pet dogs have pups willy nilly is as stoopid as letting people breed willy nilly when there are insufficient funds IMO, but it will always be with us ! I suppose if you could get accurate figures, there would be more of them than there are of regular Dog Breeders, even here in England - but within the context of this thred, yes my remarks were being addressed to the latter, I wasn't even thinking about the former for these purposes.

Certainly in the working dog / hundsports arena, there are many people who are looking to find the 'right', most trainable pups with the solid temperament they'll need, and most of them are not approaching your average pet person with their odd litter. You might be surprised at the numbers of such breeders, and of Showline breeders - they may not be obvious to the general public because it often isn't too much of an overlap between 'markets' (although some of their pups do end up just being companion/family dogs, of course) ... but they exist, they are there ! Something of a 'subculture', maybe. If more people just looking for a pet bothered to do more 'research homework' before handing over their money, they would probably find that out.

Oh, and people who say they'd RATHER buy from a puppy mill than from a regular breeder who might ask too many questions ? They just deserve to have to LIVE in a puppy mill for a while ! Conditions are generally not good.Sad Smile
