Hundmutter, clarify for me, if you will, what you mean by "It is wrong because many of the dogs who have killed are not APBTs or mixes thereof."

Jenn : most 'Dangerous Dogs' legislation, some in various States and, notably, the UK's own DD Act, seeks to demonise APBTs, simply because it arose in knee-jerk decision making and there were thoughts to link attacks on humans (mainly children) SOME of which were by Pits - or dogs "thought to be Pit Bulls" - with getting rid of illegal Dog Fighting. Neither portion of the thinking has worked (as many of us warned from the outset it wouldn't over here); 'banning' the existence of and breeding of Pits has not worked. Nor, really, has the route where some US towns stop people keeping (specifically) Pits within their precincts. The whole premise of Breed Specific legislation is that all the sins can be laid at the door of ONE breed (or a small handful of breeds) originally bred for fighting with each other, or other creatures. This is so patently not true it is laughable, but the legislators persist in saying how awful ('all') Pits are, as distinct from how awful some people's treatment of both dogs and children is; and a whole 'industry' has grown up around this supposition, with tattoos and registers and police 'experts in identification' and rules for how 'arrested' dogs should be kennelled, and Court systems, and ...
I do know this is a view of / position on the APBT you do NOT share. I don't think the breed are all a problem either (and certainly not when they are in the hands of caring, responsible owners ) - but a significant number of people who have the power still do,unfortunately.

Going back to what LE dogs 'should' or shouldn't do, yes Gustav is absolutely correct about that, I have seen (both in videos and in life) UK Police dogs biting at people in all sorts of bodily places, both in arresting individuals, and in crowd control. ESPECIALLY when those people are fighting back against the dog. I have never seen one do this IN (Police Dog Unit) TRAINING sessions, or public Displays ! It isn't 'aimed for', it is just part of how the reality pans out when adrenaline is up.
