Baerenfangs Erbe

Actually, not every dog will pick up a metal or a copper pipe.

I have had dogs that will chase anything but won't actually pick up the metal or copper pipe. And there are dogs that have prey but no hunt drive. I've made the mistake with a Foster Mali to say "Oh, her prey is so high, there is no way she doesn't have hunt drive." and she proofed me wrong.

It's not all that simple when it comes to actual hunt drive. I want a strong hunt drive in my dogs and my dogs will search for copper and metal pipes. Hunt drive is what is important to me because my heart beats SAR and I've seen too many poor excuses on both, SAR and Police Dog Teams that I will compromise for mediocre when it comes to Hunt Drive.

Dukes dog looks very methodical and you can clearly see the possession.

However, I am with him, not every dog will retrieve or search for metal and copper and there is a difference between TEACHING them to retrieve them and the innate drive to want to do it on their own without ever having seen one before (like in Nalas video).

but if the judge scores the dog well the pups sell better(OOPS)

do people realise that every crap and cripple dog from germany and Czech also comes from titled parents as EVERY dog comes from titled parents !!!

the problem is that dogs need a MINIMUM effort to title and tons of dogs are barely scratching that minimum and/or a judge with a sleepy eye to pass

Must say that I THINK it is different for people in the USA to train and title so would definately put more weight to that than the purchased ones

It's actually getting harder and harder in Germany as well. Good helpers are few and far between and people start traveling two to three hours just like we have to over here. Sure, it's still easier because just the sheer amount of trials themselves without having to drive 5 hours at a time, will make it easier and you do have by far more RH options to title than over here.

Duke, surely we aren't talking about the same video here. The video i remember has a bald man throwing a metal on floor and the dog picking it up. Wink Smile

Oh, and there's a lot of searching when it involves MY PET dog. When I am lying under the car in my garage, she almost always SEARCHES and successfully steals the wrench I most badly need at that time, followed by me swearing and SEARCHING where she has hidden it.Devil Smile

Lol duke…actually, minimum effort is what the hundreds of breeders in the United States are doing right now. Buy a bitch from Germany…probably with a BH, and breed it to the closest national competitor or regional competitor around. Most are 2-3 generations in without a single working title or certification. Most don’t even do bite work once every two years, but some do and sell it like it’s some amazing feat that the dog bites. Puppies chasing rags seems to be the new “working dog test.” Look…it chases! It will work! Truthfully…by the time the dogs are a year old, they’re probably sitting on a couch somewhere and no one even knows what they’re capable of or what kind of dog the parents did produce.

Most breeders in the states are also not going to hold back dogs for long, it’s not worth it and the risk is too high. I can sell a puppy for $2000-$2500. I can sell a 6-8 month old with really good sport foundation and hip/elbow prelims in all three phases for $3500-$4000. That’s if the dog is actually capable of doing the work at a decently high level. And sure, could probably always find some sucker to buy even a below average dog, with below average training, but I’m not in it for that. In either case, the added expense and time isn’t worth the money you get at the end of the 6 months. Especially when I can get a board and train for over $1000 a month. A puppy…way too big of a risk for most working programs or serious IPO competitors/participants to even think about.

And then there are the sheeple who watch a short clip and from that create an entire lifestyle of the poster of the video, without having any facts at hand...only a short clip and some description of the dog in the clip. Those steeple are omniscient gurus who believe their made up stories about people they know nothing about. And like the antifas they probably are, they must keep their identity hidden at all cost, while they blend in with the rest of the herd.

While I personally don't put much value into titles anymore, I do hold high standards for dogs and I do hold a lot of dogs back. I also place a lot of dogs for free or into co-ownerships etc.

I am more interested in how my dogs develop and turn out than about selling for high price. I want to know the health issues, I want to know about their confidence, drives, temperament. I want to know the weaknesses and strengths.
It is also why I like to use local dogs that I know in and out rather than the next National Champion. Even if that means the dog isn't titled.

To me, it's not about the money. It's something I am passionate about. We are definitely holding back 2 or 3 puppies back again this time.

From the C litter, it turned out to be a fantastic decision because we got to see the differences in personalities, how they mature, drives etc.

This is something I've learned from home. Build a network of trust, place dogs into foster situations and watch them grow.

Bruna "only" had a BH and Veus an IPO3 plus LGA. It takes ages to title a dog in our area and it shouldn't. But that is how it is. So yeah, people move to breeding bitches with BH because it takes thousands upon thousands to title a dog, depending where you live, not speaking of sometimes up to three years.

Best Hunt drive I have seen is a complete natural ( no training ) on a Marko V Cellerland grandson through Kai Vom Silberbrand . The dog went beserk breaking every young thicket and shrub for over an hour searching for a dime was thrown by the owner into the bushes. after an hour he called off the dog. That was my first intro to the GSD back in the very early 80's.
I think on another thread Gustav metoined he had some Marko progeny with the same tendency.

"Berserk" for over an hour, for a dime? The dog held the intensity for that long?

I need to see that live.
