This is very interesting. I know of few trainers in the area I live (near Sacramento, California) who claim to be licensed. I wonder what the state requirements are for a person to become licensed and to have that license renewed.

Where does it say it is illegal to charge people for workung/selling/training a dog for anykind of Projection (ANY) unless they have a state license? Is it illegal in California? Can you cite the govt. code section?

Jman, I was just quoting SVSW's post. I don't know if SVSW is right or wrong--so, I can't answer your questions. I do know that California does license some dog trainers. I do know that, technically, (unless laws have changed) anyone who sells more than 2 dogs in a calendar year is supposed to have a resale permit and to collect sales tax. I used to do this when I sold puppies.

Austalian United Schh Clubs have helper and judges programmes available and helpers can go for their various licences.

Hello, I know of about 5 states that you cannot do this in.If you have any transfer of money in any given situation for the teaching of a dog to bite,in a technical manner its Professional Protection training and doesnt matter. In the event you are a club and you pay the person who is in charge of the money itself{thats ok},if you give it to the helper then he has broken a law somewhere.Almost every state has a law that extends and you have to be certified to train a dog in this manner.Sales taxes have nothing to do with it.These laws so extend nor have anything to do with any Organization{i.e. USA-DVG-ect} or club, its states that have them.Texas , Missouri, and Florida,New York have such laws implemented. For example, I see people say a bad helper can mess up a dog{Fact}same with a decoy in a suit can ruin one great animal. It takes years to learn to control drives in dogs without ruining one,not just any person needs to have the chance to just go buy a sleeve, suit,or whatever and just go at it,right? Even in Personal Protection training{suit work}we only charged 5.00 per person per day and that was a full day of working dogs, its a club and that money went back to equipment and all.As much as I traveled doing shows, competing Ive learned all kinds of things.Just tought some of you might like to know this, so you can check with your state or local agencies and they can answer that for you.Call a local security company,Pd dog trainer,Personal Protection trainer and see what they tell you, state capital.Helpers are exactly that!!JMOPO This is tricky staute in Texas, Sec. 1702.225. DOG TRAINER. An individual acts as a dog trainer for purposes of this chapter if the individual, as the employee of a licensed guard dog company or investigations company, trains a dog used to protect persons or property or to conduct investigations. There are laws in the Penal Code that most dont know about. http://hera.tcps.state.tx.us http://hera.tcps.state.tx.us/

If one reads the Sec 17092.225 DOG TRAINER from whatever unidentified source, one immediately sees that this segment of the code cited DOES NOT APPLY to Schutzhund or sport trainers, but rather people working in guard dog or investigations where the dog is going to be trained as a protection dog or guard dog. I pay a helper to help me work my many dogs. I am pleased to do so. We have a club but helpers are scarce and no young ones are up and coming. Even if my club had a helper, I personally prefer to train with my helper alone as we can get a lot more accomplished. For me, it is pure and simple, a business proposition and someone who is skilled working for me, regardless of that skill, is paid. In my state, there is no requirement that my sport helper be certified. Hell, we do not even have that requirement yet in our national level schutzhund club (although DVG has such a program).

"I pay a helper to help me work my many dogs. I am pleased to do so."--Hodie Hodie, are you talking about a private trainer who works with you alone, or a club helper? "I wonder what the state requirements are for a person to become licensed and to have that license renewed."--Louise. Louise, where do you intend to go with this thread? Are you challenging someone's credentials?

by hodie on 13 December 2003 - 20:12

Kerry, I pay my helper to work privately with me since I am training more than a few dogs. We do not pay a helper for club work, but we do make sure the helper is appreciated in various ways.

Kerry wrote: "Louise, where do you intend to go with this thread? Are you challenging someone's credentials?" How can one challenge anyone's credentials if none are required?? We hear of so many horror stories (poor training, overcrowded conditions, dead dogs) and occasionally see abusive helpers and training by people who derive their livelihoods from schutzhund training.

Hi Hodie, Thanks for the response. I was just asking out of curiosity, since I've needed to go that route myself recently, prior to trying to refresh and clean up two dogs for a Breed Survey For Life.
