LaPorte, Just like what felon issue? BFTCC and Dee, thank you for making such and effort to save one of the dogs. Reading your accounts of running through the woods made my eyes sweat. All, thanks for making the effort. Mu husband and I are both certified Leave No Trace trainers, it's so against all we do and teach to see things like this.

BFTCC, it's funny about someone thanking you for cleaning up after your dog. At the WDA, Mike West's wife came up to me and thanked me for cleaning up after mine. At first I thought, "Silly woman, it's my dog. I'm supposed to do that." After these sad stories I now understand.

Next time you belong to a club that sponsors a show, contact the local boy scouts, they will provide you with a clean up crew for a donation, other clubs will do that too, Kiwanis for one. In lieu of donating for a clean up crew, form a committee prior to the show. Don't depend on the exhibitors to keep the site clean. If the hosting club doesn't do it, no one will and the site might be lost in the future. We AKC people might not know much, but we do know to never count on the good sense of the exhibitors to keep the site clean. It ain't going to happen because some exhibitors are just too lazy or too uppety to scoop dog shit even if it's from their own dogs. Makes me wonder what their houses and kennels must look like.

Sorry, AKC shows are not immune to this. The last one I was at was as bad, except no puppy killers.

YOU invite the same people every single year although you know about their behavior, but you do it because of their experience in handling dogs and because of their good "connections". I don¿t know, if I translate right, but in Germany we call this " howling with the wolf". Most of these people are not better than the American handlers ( it¿s not this difficult ), but for these people flying to the States is a big deal, it¿s like well payed holidays, at this special weekend they are the kings and YOU play their game. I still believe in friendship, but how many of these guys do you want to call "friend" besides this special weekend? You make use of them, and they make use of you. Work together, train and handle your dogs, it¿s up to YOU to change things and to no one else. YOU decide what happens in your club, YOU invite the judges and the handlers. A very good American Bred dog has won this competition, I¿m sorry, I wasn¿t there, but this result shows, that American people that REALLY raise, title, and train their dogs have a chance. And this is no question of "where did the judge sleep", it¿s a question of hard work. Congratulations Mr John Henkel!

I'm sorry people---why wait to complain to someone else. If I saw some dog depositing a load and the owner wasn't immediately picking it up, I'd be screaming bloody murder. I'm considerate enough to pick up after my guys, and I don't want to then step in someone else's dog's shit. And, even though it's generous of anyone to help clean up others' dog deposits, that person is only prolonging the inevitable----complete frustration and acknowledgement that it accomplishes nothing. (Shelley, you're a saint. I'd be throwing that shit or trash right back at the owner). The puppy that died has been haunting me since I read about this yesterday. Initially, I thought the breeder was as bad as the owner, but maybe he or she had the impression that the owner had immediately left for home. AND, I just don't get it as usual. You get a new pup, and you don't want to spend every single moment with it from that moment on. How do you even leave it at all? This is all so crazy. From what all of you are saying, it seems apparent that everyone has to take a proactive stance AT THE MOMENT---If you look foolish, so what? Do you really care about the opinion of some jerk who has absolutely no respect for you or anyone else. (Remember, they are leaving dog shit for you to step in). Gross. I know some people don't like the bags--then, get newspaper, already. I remember Videx (a while back on either a thread or maybe in a synopsis of one of the seiger shows on his site) commenting on the dog shit problem. I was appalled. But this seems to be a constant. No way would I wait for others to handle this nonsense. What is the big, fricking deal, anyway, to pick up the shit with a newspaper and throw it in an available trash can, probably no more than 10ft away?

"Initially, I thought the breeder was as bad as the owner, but maybe he or she had the impression that the owner had immediately left for home." LMH The 5 month old pup may not have been bought at the show - may have been a spectator's dog, one that had been with the owner since 8 weeks old, still owned by a breeder, or entered in one of the classes. We don't know. What I do know is that the owner had no common sense and no regard for the pup. Doesn't make us look good if we have to have animal control and the police involved at our shows either.

All of this is exactly why I never showed my horses and will not be showing my dogs either! Absolutly rediculous, dog people acting in that manner. Who picks up the garbage and dog shit at home?! This is when they should be on their best behaviour, a huge public event like that!

by LMH on 24 April 2007 - 21:04

LaPorte-- I guess I misinterpreted the earlier post. I thought the pup had just been acquired-- therefore, my incredulous reaction to his being left at all. Just very sad---and from what I also read, many others were just as reckless and if honest with themselves, would admit--"There but for the grace of God, ..."
