NatureDragon, you say the breeder you went to was 'recommended' to you, but you don't say where or who by ? Are you telling us that somebody (or more than one 'somebody') you 'spoke' to through PDB actually recommended this breeder to you ? If so, did you take their word for it, or did you research the breeder further ? Perhaps you should let the Admins know, even if you do not make this information a public post.

Bob - absolutely ! It used to be a lot easier to tell an advertiser's Kennel name from their Username Profile on here, too; Oli, any chance we could get back to that, please ? I know it may not be 100% but it was a help. PS: Also Oli, just to let you be aware, like others have mentioned, I'm having troubles with Edit of posts ...

I like that Oli has it set up so that a poster's User Profile can include links to their dogs and their registered kennel. That's a real help in determining a breeder's credentials, if the person posting an ad is an active member.

If they weren't an active member, I'd be digging as deeply as I could into their background on the net...

Well...Reputable breeders don't mind their names being associated with their kennel...But if you're hiding something then I guess you don't want your name out there...

i think people asking for impossible.
moderators can keep this board from sliding into chaos but cannot control members personal qualities and distinguish
good ones from fraudsters.
breeders itself must build own reputation, gain trust and make own good name. as Bob said - openness of breeders in
regard of who they are, what they doing is a first major starting point. show your dogs, demonstrate your achievements
and you have half of job already done.
second half is personality of breeder and depends on communication with potential buyers. tell people your perception
and view on breed, what is your goals in breeding, what you doing to achieve it.
sure, there will be some folk who won't agree with some things but it's just life with all possible variations and values.
i guess for commercial breeders main objective isn't about to convert others into their personal believe but to find alike
minded, who will be happy with dogs, obtained from them.
avoiding communication just because someone don't like what you doing, someone has different view and can't agree
with you - won't help at all in quest to build own name and reputation.

Largely agree, ValK, but at least if the admins get told stories like this they can build a picture of any breeders who have been involved in dodgy actions, despite having perhaps built an otherwise 'good' reputation over time.

what valk says pretty much sums it up.

why would anyone expect it to be the responsibility of a "forum" to be responsible for what they choose to do?

I have bought 4 dogs from ads/contacts I made over the years on PDB.

2 from the same breeder, 1, absolutely outstanding, 1 pretty much sh#t. I went to Germany for one and just sent the money for the other. y'all guess which was which.

the 3 I went and put my hand between their ears were everything I expected and wanted, maybe even exceeding my expectations.

the one I just sent the money to a "reputable" breeder with a pretty ad, I placed in a pet home for free just to get her out of my yard.

I understand getting less than expected, I absolutely do not understand anyone getting shagged and blaming the "ad".

dogs are not machines, there can be very good and not so good in any breeding from any breeder.

jmo,
Rik

The problem is that when you, as a scammer, is looking to scam 2-5 people of ~1500$ each, you can spend time to make an efficient front. Keep in mind that they will have multiple scams going on simultaneously. So they will be looking to scam dog buyers, not just from here but from every dog website that has classifieds. lets say 3-6 months.
* Create a fake website
* create a bank account
* register a phone number
* register an address
* etc..

Then when a few months have passed they go on a selling spree, getting as much buyers as they can from all the websites that they can. Pedigreedatabase.com being just one of many.

2 weeks later, they shut down operations, close websites, close bank accounts etc.. and tally up the number.

same for fake buyers. A bit less money to be made but they are A) targeting to steal a dog or more commonly B) duping the seller. i.e. send a 1800$ check for a 1200$ deposit and then asking for the difference back. 4 weeks later the seller is in the hole for the 600$ difference.

Some scams can last for a year or more, these ppl are patient. Set up stings for different breeds of dogs, cat or horses. Play the part on websites. Then sell a year later and walk away with tremendous amount.

Pay a person 500$ a month to play make-belief on all these fake kennels/breeders = 6000$ a year and make off with 100k$+ in scams. Absolutely worth it if your so inclined.

So perhaps what we need to do is create a ring of like-minded breeders all over that are willing to travel a bit and check out what someone else is planning to buy,

Nothing beats meeting the breeder and looking at the dogs in real life.

Could put up a system where you can pay someone you trust to drive ~100 km to check out if someone is legit or not.

"Nothing beats meeting the breeder and looking at the dogs in real life."

absolutely nothing beats this for anyone who knows what they are looking at and what they want and need.

and just to add a little side story of how that works, I attended the 2008 Sieger with a very experienced and well known AKC breeder/judge who was very well versed in German S/L. He made a list of dogs that might do well in the U.S. and we spent some time time traveling Germany after the show looking at dogs.

one male was absolutely spectacular, no doubt from a conformation standpoint would have been AKC Champion/GSDCA Select in short order and I was ready to hand the money over after about 15 mins. I mean the dog had it all, looks, confidence.

my more experienced companion took the leash and asked the owner/keeper to step out of sight. the dog fell completely apart and I thought would either break his neck or escape custody before the keeper could get back. I had never seen even the weakest AmSL act so berserk.

I guess, what I'm saying is that no matter what anyone has learned or experienced or think they know (and I apparently didn't know near as much as I thought I did}, there is always someone who knows more and can take advantage. this guy would have easily fooled me and me looking at the dog.
