Koots, thank you for the follow-up information. I definitely prefer working lines -- Ahroun was trained for SAR and while I never titled him, he had met the requirements at least for BH & AKC Intermediate. Also, I wasn't aware just how far out of standard Ahroun was then, and that Ulric was actually close to the upper end of it. I will revise my desires accordingly (including editing the list above).

Doh, apparently there's a time limit to edits. But for anyone who may be following this, please make the following change to the desired traits:

  • Weight
    • Sire: 80lbs / 37kg or above
    • Dam: 65lbs / 30kg or above
  • Line
    • Working Lines -- WGWL, EGWL, CWL

And again, my thanks to all who are helping refine my desires so that I can maximize my chances of success.

A good place to start looking for a dog capable of doing schutzhund is to find a club local to you and visit, talk with the members and view their dogs. Here's a list of USCA clubs in that region:

I cannot attest to this breeder, or any others in the CO area, maybe someone 'local' can point you in the right direction.

If you are looking for a solid Candidate, you can try one of these two breeders; I currently own two Wendelin dogs and have owned and worked 2 Canczech Dogs
Do your research, you will hear only good things about these Breeders,

Sorry I forgot to mention a couple other good breeders...…. in the U.S. (not Canada)

For working line - Jillian at Kavallerie German Shepherds.

http://vtgsd.com

Does outstanding puppy foundation work and breeds to the standard.

If you would like a solid Show Line ( I tried to buy a pup from her but it was Her Pick pup) contact Rebecca.

http://www.ausgerstbrei.com/

She raises and titles her own dogs, and while the working Line folks don't think German Show Lines can compare to their dogs, in my opinion, most working lines could not keep up with Rebecca's show lines.

Just because a dog has a working line pedigree does not mean it can work!

I have encountered many "working Line" shepherds that could not work their way out of a paper bag if you helped them. Same thing with show lines.

I'm sure there are other good breeders in North America, these are just the ones I know of and deal with.

Good luck in your search

Sandy

Sandy - these are 'Germanic / International' Show type you are talking about, yeah, not AKC/ASL ? Providing that's so, I'd tend to agree with you - not all dogs of these lines, but certainly some, can still equal or even out-'work' some of the Working Lines dogs. Not everyone appreciates this fact however, nor that WL dogs are individuals too and some do not have what it takes despite the genetic strengths that have gone into producing them.
But be careful with saying that around here ! There are PDB members who would defend all (i.e. they over-generalise) WL against ALL 'Showdogs'; and some will be quite harsh about demonstrating their view.

Linda.

PS Am not saying you would 'never' find an ASL that could also work - I know there are some breeders who do (real) Herding, for instance - but these are very few & far between, they are just not built for it or bred for it, and most ASL breeders do not train for work.

Weight parameters are ridiculous, to be blunt. Not only is what you're looking for way out of standard and into "king" or Shiloh territory (something you'll not find with legit SchH titles), but keep in mind it's a useless descriptive, as I can make any dog as obese or as lean as I choose. I won't say I ignore inquiries like that, but they definitely get mentally filed as "I don't think so" and I'll typically suggest you seek a rescue that already fits those parameters, as no one should be breeding them intentionally.

I'd steer clear of anyone bragging on a dog's weight on their website, as a buyer, just as I, as a seller, don't take weight-buyers seriously. Not only should weight never be a criteria so long as the size of the dog is within standard, but the buyers fixated on such specific aesthetics as weight and coat length and color descriptives are rarely *really* looking for a dog with working temperament, no matter what they think.

I turned down a very determined buyer for a puppy due to the buyer being obsessed with toe penciling and ears standing (uh, shouldn't they all??) because if that's her main criteria, the pup's temperament would not have been a fit long-term, as she had no desire to do anything constructive with this puppy and was ill-equipped to handle the aggression that may have come out later. Literally all she wanted to talk about was guaranteeing ears will stand, eyes will match and color will be what she wanted at maturity. No, thanks.

Wanting a dominant working dog to train for nothing but companionship and emotional support...hmmm...how do I say this... please consider what type outlet for drive will make your selection happiest. I see too many long wishlists that are all geared toward what the human wants in a perfect world and too few realistic ones that take into account what said human has to offer a dog with those traits. Fwiw...
