First, I believe no matter how a wolf wants to avoid ingesting vegetation matters from the digestive tract of large prey animals, it will not completely eliminate it. There will not be time and other means to do so. Then there are small animals eaten whole, fecal matters and vegetation together.

One of my GSDs seems to have more regular bowel movement with a small amount of grain in her diet.

I am not saying that grain is important for the dog to digest, but a small amount of grain is far from abnormal in a dogs diet and may even be a good source of fiber.

It is a fad to aim to remove all grains from a dogs diet, unless a particular dog is known to be sensitive to a certain grain.

What can be agreed is that grains should be a very small percentage in a dogs diet.

Well, hasn't this gone off topic.

daisy304 - Yes, that is perfectly fine to feed to puppies. I personally wouldn't go with white tripe, if anything, you would be wasting money. So best to keep the change on that one. As far as what everyone else is saying regarding grains - to each his own. I don't feed it, but again, it's just a preference. Often times vets will give a variety of methods to solidify stool, things they don't naturally eat in the wild - rice, kelp, pumpkin etc. So, you can keep it in mind, but it's not going to kill the dog.

Any tripe always has nutritional value. It is digestable protein, not the best but still animal protein digestable.

We are very lucky to have a good butcher who has a good supply of chicken backs. We have been using a BARF diet for FATs and Protein with our dogs but it's part of a balanced diet.
