Most chips used in Europe are ISO chips needing an ISO scanner. The chips provided in the US by the Vets or animal shelters are different brands and need different scanners. As far as I know there is only one scanner that is able to read all 3 chips used at the current time. Please be aware of this if considering bying a scanner for trials, or if your dogs traveling to Europe for whatever reason (training, breeding, shows).

I too like both, tattoo and chip, as there are still some difficulties to having chips recognized here for trials, and of course one can always forgett to bring the scanner....LOL

Which scanner reads all 3 type chips.

Here in the state of NSW Australia the Companion Animal Bill was introduced about 12 - 14 years ago and part of that Bill stated that all dogs and cats had to be  micro chipped before selling or re homing, this meant for us that even though ALL of our GSD's were tattooed we are still required by law to have them micro chipped as well. We usually Tattoo all of our GSD's at about 8 weeks and microchips are done at the time of 1st  vaccination 6-8 weeks. Here the tattoo is the only identification  recognized by the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia even though they are micro chipped.
The only problem with microchips is that they can migrate, I sold a puppy at 4.5 month old and his microchip that was done at 7 weeks was never found so that meant he had to be re chipped and I also own 2 dogs with micro chips way down over the scapula that are very hard to find.
