I am so glad you posted Johan77, in the past 50 years it is known that Sweden has been in the forefront of producing and breeding for excellent hips. As I look at the pedigrees of these two dogs further back, you see a strong connection to the DDR dogs of the 60's, 70's, and early eighties when the East dogs were of exceptional hip quality. To see Frei v Barutherland and others undergirding the pedigrees of these two dogs is making plenty of sense.

Good god look at OFA records Puck has produced almost perfectly bred to both west german czech and ddr dogs. Same with Zoran look at the records and actual pedigrees and czech records and publications all the info is in black and white are most americans really this lazy not to read and do research on such things?

Gustav, yes some of the more used DDR-dogs here also had very good hips and elbows, I guess because there are so many that x-ray their dogs and the informations is easy to see in public database makes breeding decisions easier. So it´s correct GSDs with some genrations breed here often has better HD/ED compared to foreign dogs. Probably one of the best HD/ED producer here in modern times was this dog, also a wellknown workingdog in the national programs. 81 out of 89 offspring x-rayed, 7% HD, 3% ED. The average HD in the breed is about 27% and ED 17% in the GSD x-rayed here.

@Johann77, one thing I have seen in general and that is the DDR dogs of today Do not produce the consistency of hips and temperament that the earlier dogs produced. Dogs like Lord,Held, Artus, I think we're the product of a greater emphasis on breeding for work and hips.

The percentage of offspring with normal hips is not knowable, as long as OFA is not needed for ownership. It will take very draconian policy to mandate OFA for mere ownership.

As a breeder, one can only look back into the pedigree, it seems to me.

For human hereditary diseases, the doctor general will ask questions up to grandparents. “Did your great grandparents have this?” I have never read this type of question. May be it is also a matter of practicality.
