Diesel, did you even read my post? No one will answer me. Maybe they don't really know and realize they over-generalized. Who knows. I personally don't call anything solid unless it is. Having a color besides black, anywhere, is not solid. Call it black. Ideally, call it GENETICALLY black, if it is.

The point is not whether it matters or not, the point was that they DO exist.

Embarrassed to have an all black dog? Huh?

Jenn,

My first German Shepherd was solid black with not one bit of any other color anywhere.  He died in 2006 at 13.  My biggest regret (other than missing him terribly) was that I did not store his semen and I only bred him twice.  He was a grandson of David Nebelholz and he was also entirely black,.

At thirteen he finally got a little bit of white on his muzzle.

My dog has a little American showlines a few generations back in her otherwise West German showlines pedigree, & although they do not have pix posted, Sherjak's Midnight Tango, & her dam Sherjack's Midnight Jamboree, were both solid black, from the pictures the breeder showed me. Are there still solid blacks today in American showlines? I mostly following working lines now, but I don't recall seeing any recently....just curious. And I might add, she is a very nice girl, I regret never having titled her, she would have done very well, no health issues so far, the most trouble free dog I have ever owned. Of course she is young still, at 5. But her dam is still a happy, if slightly arthritic girl at 14 years old, so I don't really expect any issues. jackie harris

I have a black dog and his coat did not turn black until 10 months of age.  In general, I agree that black is black and you can spot it early.

My guy Zavien in my avatar is solid black. He only has 2 -3 pieces of white  hair on him where my girl Layla took a chuck of hair out during breeding. He has not changed his coat color at all. Depending on where you live some people have never seen a solid black dog let alone a black sable. This is the first time I had more people wanting my black pups before my dark sables. You can see more picture's of Zavien on my website if you desire to.
