Hi Trotters, I'm no Rocket Scientist but my little understanding of such things as blood tests etc is this;-
If a dog who has died from or is suffering from an illness , the illness can be diagnosed via a blood sample
because the (antibodies, enzymes, virus) or 'Whatever' iwill be present in the blood. However, conditions / illnesses
CANNOT be diagnosed from a Blood Sample unless the dog has already contracted or suffering from the illness.
To find out IF YOUR DOG has the POTENTIAL to get something (i.e A carrier or potential patient / sufferer) then you
need to do a DNA test.
Conclusion - Blood tests can be done at vets sending to local labs. DNA tests have to be done by the scientists aware of that particular DNA molecule. I think this is the difference but as I said, I am just a layman myself too.
However, if this is so, then if this Buster was suffering from the condition at the time then a blood test would suffice, but not any dog which was not suffering.

Best Regards

David I have been polite and I certainly am not stupid
so what on earth is the matter???

I asked some simple questions, that by the look of it you cant,
or more to the point wont answer...

looks like there is more to this than meets the eye.

There is no need to have a mardy or to be quite so RUDE
perhaps that is where Hamza gets it from. (mind you he has the excuse of being 13)

thankyou csence
you have saved me alot of typing
there have been some interesting points raised
what originally started as petowner asking about jetski, who looking at his breeding has more than a good chance from both parents of being a JRD carrier or worse (if JRD is a problem of course)

it turned into a good debate.... then into a argument as per usual.....

Trotters, looks like your vet is wrong, i do hope you tell him he cannot test with a blood test, i'm sure he will be glad of your advise, lol, lol.  Nice to see Davey boy getting in to character, when cornered use immature name calling, typical!!!!

by Trotters123 on 24 October 2009 - 18:10

Bazza I don't think my Vet is wrong in the sense of the word, however I think maybe I didn't ask a specific enough question to get that answer, if there is a difference. Maybe what I should have asked was 'Can a blood test diagnose JRD potential before the said dog is diagnosed with the disorder?'
I will give my guy a phone on Monday and hopefully he wil be able to give me an answer. I have known him all my life so I do trust what he says and he knows I don't take the runaround. If he doesn't know he will advise who I should ask to get the correct answer.
I do have to add that it amazes me that someone of David Pains age can act so childishly and not be prepared or consider other peoples opinions. Some folk eh?

Hi Trotters, great idea, will be very interested to find out if a simple blood test can determine if the dog is a 'Carrier' or not.  Like you said, it will save a lot of time and money if this is the case. But if this is the case, could you also ask your vet why other things cant be checked for in this way, carriers of Epilepsy for example before they start fitting, etc etc? Thanks.

Sue B yes will do, but I think I will have to clarify whether the test proves carrier or sufferer before anything can be done for definate. Just as someone pointed out earlier. I need to ask specifically does the test show a potential carrier or other.
But yes I will certainly ask, I would imagine that nowadays great things are acheived by blood work.
