When i still trained with my first club a young couple came up from Indy area and were checking out Schutzhund clubs they had a nerve bag female they got from Mittlewest kennels the dog was gun shy and very nervous. They paid 2500 dollars from the pup with the story of the best europen breedings all the titles and fancy paper work you could buy. The end was the dog got washed out at 2 years old. These same peopel went back to mentioned breeders bought 2 more puppies 1 male 1 female they were told that the lines would make  a greta breeding pair. The male was spooky scared of every thing the female slightly better. 3200.00 each!!!! It,s a buyer beware market you have to look thru the bells and whistles and know what you want and where to get it.

The best things to fend off these crazy prices is knowledge and information and not impulse buying.  The market is the market. Stephnitz wantted the average man to be able to own a GSD. I keep that in mind.

Nice dog, Steve!

This is an interesting thread. I do have a question though, after reading it... if the SL are lacking working ability, and the WL, are lacking conformation, what is the big deal about crossing the two to get the best of both worlds? Someone explain it to me, please, because, while there are SL's and there are WL's, when it comes down to it, a German Shepherd is a German Shepherd.

(watch, now I'm going to get my head ripped off for even asking that)

Double post - whoopsies.....

Dawulf, the WL camp often contends the SL side isn't bringing enough to the table, and in fact will detract from what they already have.

Rin Tin Tin was a sable not saddleback blk/red

by Bancroft on 23 April 2011 - 21:04

Maybe if you re-read my post, you will see that a WL sable was at the top of my list. I chose a blk/tan because his breeding and background fit my lifestyle among other things. I NEVER stated that I DIDN'T chose a WL because they couldn't. There were just many factors that lay into my choice. I know several people who own WL GSD's as family pets, I just didn't find what I was looking for. Thanks.

LOL. WTF? Is this what the the public think. God help us.

ok .. i am going to throw a monkey wrench into this thread .. SL / WL ... HU .. what about the long hairs[ not long coat ] i had a Odin Tanennmeise grand son .. longhair .. i named him Kato , after Bruce Lee ... he was black and red built , and he had the ferocity of Bruce Lee .. this is true . he has passed but i couldn't part with his pedigree ..on  three seperate occasions , three sperate  SV German Judges marveled at him - they were astonished by him !!  three !!, V-rated strtucture in Germany Standards , and a natural prortection , tracking & obedience . at 6 months sch1 protection doen , in 3 weeks taught a sch1 track[ without article indication , had all OB down pat by 6 months .. So --- who would want this longhair ?? who and what one would have paid for him as a pup?  and at that ime , he was sin't even considered a GSD to even step near a show ring [ ie to show]. so i guess different values for different folks .. different strokes for different folks .. and what ehy are willing to pay for percieved value !!he was one of my best GSDs aside from my Fado Karthago progeny !! you think someone would have paid $1500 , 2000 , 2500 ..... and as some advertised SL 7000 for him ??  IMO  , no ....  i wouldn't have sold him for .. ?? 15,000 !!
