Ok Jenni - we all have issues :))  Just kidding of course.

It is very nice to get to know people through our other associations because we learn vicariously and can decide if we want to "work with" or not and so a lot of recommendations, suggestions come that way.  Here is where J and I know one another and so rely well on a common reputable expert's word.

My suggestion on the original poster and others talk about imports - having a little experience here - if you can't reach out and touch someone then you take high risk.  I have purchased from plenty of small breeders in Czech,Slovakia and Germany with mostly great success but when you have that one that doens't deliver you absorb that loss.  Heck we have the same problem here. So be prepared and hopefully you will find success.

Communication is difficult enough within this country trying to express and interpret what someone is looking for in terms of dog qualities because we all have a slightly different outlook and use of words.  videos are a useful tool but not a guarantee of what you see.   You need to deal with a person who has high understanding of working dogs, not a layperson - and so many problems arise here.   It is the buyers responsibility too to bring the seller into understanding of what they expect.   Remember, it is a dog - not a machine.

Then there are contracts.  Ok guys  who has EVER had to enforce one of these?  I have had two in my 30 years doing this that I was willing to pay the attorney on.

Throw most of those contracts in the trash, find realiablility/reputation and start some massive communicating.

btw - at Westwood Kennels - we ALWAYS take back our dogs and sometimes others too!  Always without question.

and good luck!   (thanks Jenni for the smile!)

Cheers!

Sable go to Westwood and watch them work there dogs. How many do they compete with and title or train their selves this is how you judge their dogs. People who just buy and resale are not dog trainers or breeders . You can have a hundred litters a year and that does not make you a breeder, just a producer. When you keep puppies in a bar all together for months on end with no socialization and training waiting on a buyer then you are no better than a puppy mill. I will never forget what a prominent German breeder told me one time: If buy age 7 weeks my pups are not sold I will find nice homes to give them to, they are like produce they will spoil like many tomatoes. They need training and a life ..........

I don't trust many.  Trust is a serious word.

I get plenty of people asking me about who can I recommend and I only have 5 people that I have either met in person or have continual extensive dialouge with who I feel comfortable referring people to them.  Funny thing is that they are all small breeders BUT they know their shit, work/train their dogs and what I like most is that they stay low key.  I look at ethics, how they view customers, their breeding programs/philosophy, etc.

I use to recommend only 1 person but now I recommend 5 breeders and tell a person that if they can't find a dog they want from 1 of these individuals then they don't know what they want.  Funny thing is that I NEVER bought my dogs 2 from these 5 people but they have some of the most knowledgable and resourceful people I have met.

Blitzen, it's refreshing to be in agreement. I think that anyone(I'm not speaking of you) who criticizes people for making insults and then flings around insults themselves in a self righteous manner is a hypocrite.

I agree with you as I have bought a dog that came from that situation.   Definitely small breeders are better in that regard (if they work and spend time with their dogs)  I guess you could be a small breeder and still do nothing with them too though.

Chaz LOL, you gotta love Scarface!

I tend to be a very trusting person, but learned not to trust most people that are trying to sell you something.

I like the people that call or visit to get to know you first / the breed / your dogs. I never trust other breeders that don't allow this interaction.
I refer people to a handful of other breeders I've learn to trust & like what they produce. Since I generally only have 1-2 litters a year I refer most people out to other breeders & help educate visitors with working lines. In my area most people only know about American lines or WGSL but we have quality breeders in both lines around here.

As for contracts I think they are handy to help prevent the dogs produced don't end up in a shelter etc. It's a piece of paper the new owner has to remind them before they must give up their dog they have a safe place to take him / her back too. I've gotten dogs back many times from a family that lost their job + home, divorce, health issues, etc.. you just never know. If your not there for the dog you made come into this life then your turning a blind eye to a most likely early end in a shelter. I've always offered a open door policy to my dogs.
But our dogs are our 4 legged children & we view their puppies as our grand pups. We take pride in their accomplishments, love all the daily cute stories, & even the sad news of their passing from the owners years later

GSD's are very popular breed so there are many breeders out there small & large. It's easy to always hear the negatives on many of the larger breeders / brokers, but a lot of clubs & trails are filled with dedicated breeders working hard to improve their line / the breed. Everyone might have a slightly different opinion on this or preference. So buyers has to make sure their ideal type of dog clicks with what the breeder is producing / goals. Buying a dog should not be like purchasing a car. You should like dealing with the breeder & feel comfortable contacting them with questions / concerns & know you'll have their support for the life time of the dog.
