Red sable has a really nice dog from what i hear and the other sport waffen dogs also seem really nice. I would love to get my next dog from them. Again JMHO.

by Blitzen on 09 December 2012 - 17:12

Uh, don't y'all making these recommendations think that you should make sure that your favorite breeders at least do the basics like xraying hips and elbows on their breeding stock before giving them your stamp of approval?

by destiny4u on 09 December 2012 - 17:12

blitzen which ones don't?

by beetree on 09 December 2012 - 17:12

Oh, Midol. I got cramps from busting a gut @ Blitzen.

by Blitzen on 09 December 2012 - 17:12

I think you would benefit  from doing some research on your own, Destiny, so I'm not going to mention specific breeders or posters.

Costs: Before I ever think about breeding my female...

baught as puppy 800 €
food/day for 2 years 665x1,5 €=997,50 €
vaccinations maybe 100 €
dewhorming around 50 €
has been sick once 150 €
dog taxes 320 €
HD/ED 150 €
SV fee 120 €
club fee 100 €
kennel registration 80 €
training 3 times the week/gas only 40x50 weeks 2000 € / for me much more
BH 10 €
AD 10 €
show rating 50 €
SchH1 20 €
Breed survey 20 €

I forgot about
Kennel
electricity
water
health supplements
treats
grooming stuff
and around 2 hours/day exclusive care 665x2=1330 hours

This only works out if
my puppy is free of HD/ED, otherwise new attempt....
the dog doesn´t become sick
I don´t fail in the trials
I don´t have to pay for any trainer or helper

There for sure is a lot more I simply forgot.

Now I´m looking for a stud...my female is now 2 years old...

stud fee 800
driving over there 100 to 500
vet check 100

I´m lucky, my bitch is pregnant!

food and supplements for several months plus 200 €
vet checks 100 €

7 puppies are born, 2 didn´t survive, but now I´m owner of 5 healthy puppies!!!

litter registration, DNA, microchip 150 €
2 times breed warden 80 €
vaccinations 200 €
dewhorming 80 €
puppy food 300 €
and on and on and on...

Hopefully the puppies are sold in the age of 8 weeks. I only have SchH1 on the female, and I only showed her once. Not the best choice for a potential puppy buyer...
One puppy I´m going to keep for myself.
3 are sold immediately, 2 for 800, 1 for 600 ( for a friend ) one I have to keep longer ( food, space, time, vet...) after a while it´s also sold for 800, lucky me!

Hopefully all of them are healthy in the future, and I don´t need to take one back....

And on and on and on...

There is much more, and the costs go on, with or without a litter.
In my statistic there is no c-section, no injuries, no HD/ED.

I am no breeder, but I worked for several - there is almost no possibility to make money out of puppies, as long as you do it correctly.
The only way to make money is to sell a great SchH competitor or a great showdog.

My female has been surgically implanted 3 times using frozen semen. Each breeding costs about 5K and so far she's had 2 puppies, missed one time and is now pg with what appears to be a very small litter, 1 or 2. The 15K total doesn't even count all the things Susie has listed above other than the stud fee.   If I sell one puppy from the current litter for 25K, I might break even.

"LOL,. you finally put on your big boy panties, and buy a WL, take it to training, what 3, 4 times, and now you know something?"

Don't know how to break this to you but there are show lines that work as well and I was training with them since before you could spell GSD.

I don't doubt that her dog is very nice at all...that was sort of my point.  I clearly like her breeder's dogs and will probably buy one of them myself at some point.

As I said, in an 'average' litter, you turn a profit, otherwise,
who the hell would breed???

And the non-breeding related expenses you quoted susie?
We too spend that on our dogs, but we don't breed them Wink Smile
We even put titles on a mildly dysplastic dog one time Tongue Smile

I have no problem with a breeder turning a profit, I have a
problem with them whining about not ever making money LOL
Especially the ones who do nothing but breed their dogs, the
dogs are pregnant from the time they hit the soil here.

Blitzen, yes, frozen AI is very expensive with usually less than
great results, it seems to be used more by those that truly have
a long term game plan and thought well ahead for years, hence
the frozen Thumbs Up

susie, you should come to North America. 'Breeders' here can
and do charge $1000 and up for puppies from untitled, untested
and sometimes unregistered sire & dam LOL
Hell, you don't even have to have any actual training
accomplishments under your belt to be a breeder here,
just buy dogs and get'em bred!!

See? you also don't need to do those pesky vaccines either
according to some 'breeders', those are far too dangerous
don'tcha know! Roll eyes  Oh, if anyone calls you out on it, tell them
that OFA sucks, and schutzhund sucks too. And titles don't
mean shit, any dog can get a title etc etc etc
But, then don't forget to plaster little brag posts everywhere
when a dog you own passes OFA or gets a title  Shades Smile
