I am  GS breeders and need advice . My male age 3 is unable to breed my female. He jumps on and humps for about 10-20 seconds with no ties and it does not seem to be even going in. I looked down there a few times and his penis was not even out and he was humping away. He Has bred last year to the same girl he bred twice to her the first time he was in with in 10 min and they locked for 20 min no pregnancy there but next heat he did good with a 45 min lock twice in two different days and it resulted in a litter of 5. He had at least 4 succsessful locks. He does not breed very often and I am wondering if he may need to be used more often?

Her heat was weak this time and she stopped bleeing 3 days ago but he is very interested so Im not sure if that could be why he is not going in. Could it be too early?? He is trying very hard and been with the girl since 11 AM he is humping alot LOL but nothing is happening also he was with her last night for 3 hours with nothing. Oddly 60% of the time he is not even hard and I had just never seen this happen I am new and just have this pair maybe this is common? or Could this be diet or health condition? He seems to be tiring easy meaning he only humps for about 20 seconds and then trys again 15 min later. I have been watching all day. I don't want to stress him or her out. His diet is Wellness core it has extar protein and glueclosime in it and he gets real meat a few times a week. He was seen by a vet who felt all his parts and nothing was said. Is there a possibilty he is just missing the spot or could it be the female?

he could just be missing,  thena gain, how hot and humid is it where you live?
past 2 days in North Texas its been mid 90's with high humidity,  just horrible.  today it is low 70's,  go figure.

Hi, No he is a family breeding pet he gets exercise in the yard and walks at least 3 times a week I wouldn't think he was stressed or overworked. I do notice though he is very hard to feed he is picky and a bit thin eventhough he is 78 pounds he is thin but not lacking strength.

I tried every type of dry food alone dry food mixed with canned and he will only seem to eat one meal a day and late at night. I always give my dogs 2 1/2 cups of dry moistend with a can of wet twice a day and he is lucky to eat about 2 1/2 cups of food a day. Although he never refuses real meat / human food. He is very stressed today though and pasing I feel bad for him i took the female away to calm him down. I don't want anyone to think I have no knowlege of breeding I just never had this happen before with dogs and want to find out why. I purchased both as breeders very nice healthy breeders and the litter before was very nice.

To Pat,
Ok so if its to early or too late would that mean no tie? does this normaly cause a no lock? She mated before and had a litter so I asume that means no vaginal stricures? I know that causes problems too.

I would think I am too early beacsue she started bleeding 8 days ago and stopped for three now. thats 8 days not 11 she only bled for about 5 days. I never seen my male mess with her unless she was ready, unless he is trying anyway out of the blue.

Can someone tell me what casues a short cycle?

mother nature causes short heat cycles.  its just the individual female.

if the female isn't fully ready,  he might be able to penetrate her,  but not enough to make the actual tie.  inside, she may still be too tight. take him away from her.  you can put him with her for 20-30 minutes in the morning or evening while temps are cool,  if he doesn't breed her, take him away till the next day.  I wouldn't just leave them together all the time.   thats asking for an injury to one or both of the dogs.

Stress can cause a short cycle.  I boarded my female when she was in heat  for 13 days and she came out of her heat beause of that then came back in3 months later and finished it.

Hi, I never leave them alone durring a breeding I usualy hold them togther too when they tie. This time I was breeding them in the home and if I left the room one went with me. I will take him away until tomorrow and see what happens tomorrow or the next day. Any other advice would be apreciated. Thanks

If you have time, try givivng the male a days rest. Then try again in the wee hours of the morning or late evening.

also try teasing the male that is holding the females vulva close to the males ose and whisking it by. males get turned on that way.
