Well done sue lets hope the BC takes the bull by the horns as to me it is the only way to safe guard our breed because it is obvious the KC are not interested in the welfare of pedigree dogs all they want is our money, my pledge stays with you sue an i hope more gsd people will do the same so we can get this up and running

This proposal clearly offers the opportunity to introduce minimum standards for our dogs that are to be used for breeding. It also puts our GSD Breed Council at the very heart of of our breeds future here in the UK, and strengthens the Breed Council,as well as strengthening our GSD Breed Clubs.

It also enhances the role of our British Sieger Event in our breeds future, and offers additional importance to role of future British Landesgruppen Shows. There is every likelihood that that our current Breed Surveyors will need to conduct more Breed Surveys, and the possibility we may require more Breed Surveyors at some time in the future.

This proposal is full off opportunities both immediate and in the future, I sincerely hope all those with influence within our breed fully recognise these opportunities and fully support this proposal. It would be wonderful if GSD Breed Clubs could pledge their support for this proposal on the forum, those within our breed needs a huge morale boost.

This year has already began to hold some promise for our breeds future, let us all rally around this proposal and ensure that we add to and fulfill that promise.

To call this scheme accredited i think clashes with the KC scheme i think it would be better if we called it say THE BC APPROVED GSD BREEDERS SCHEME or something along these lines so the public do not confuse it as being the same as the KC scheme

Hi Jim

I totally understand where your coming from and the same thought (to use a different word) crossed my mind at first, so I will give you an insight into the thinking process behind sticking with Accredited as opposed to Approved or any other name is as follows , then see if you can see the logic and agree, (hopefully?).

Firstly and this is important please let me remind everyone the difference between this and the KC scheme, this IS NOT a breeders scheme , therefore it wouldnt be called BC Approved GSD Breeders so at best it could only be called The BC Approved GSD Scheme (not Approved Breeders Scheme) because UNLIKE the KC it is THE DOGS themselves that the Breed Council are Accrediting or Approving NOT the Breeders. This is the fundamental and very important difference between the two schemes. Whereas under the KC scheme it is Voluntary and breeders will be breeding with a variety of Health and non Health tested sire and dams, under the BC scheme a Pedigree can ONLY be produced when BOTH parents have passed a Breed Council Survey in which calls for Mandatory Health Tests that must fall within a Pre determined criteria i.e. having hips xrayed is not enough, they must come back with an acceptable score in order to gain a survey pass. The dogs identity must also be certified by either tattoo or Microchip, not the case with the KC scheme who accept KC registration numbers as identification which we all know play no valid part in the REAL identification of one dog from another.

So as the KC were already using the word Accredited and much advertising had been put into the word, I believed using this same word would be more likely to CAPTURE PUBLIC ATTENTION whilst at the same time taking great pains to point out the significant difference between the MANDATORY BREED COUNCIL SCHEME and the NON MANDATORY KC SCHEM. Now tell me which CANINE BODY would then be seen to be ACTING MORE RESPONSIBLY BY DOING MORE FOR THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF THE PEDIGREE DOG !!     Now do you get my drift !?  Sneeky eh?

You see taking it one step further, the idea to use the same word and Accredit dogs rather than Breeders was hopefully, eventually to try and encourage other Breeds / Breed Councils to do a similar thing in their own breed (see proposal item 9). If many other breeds set up Breed Surveys for their Breeds too, under a similar scheme to ours then imagine just how BIG this really could become and nationwide across most breeds the PUBLIC couldnt fail to HEAR about it , LEARN about it and SOON START ASKING BREEDERS IF THEIR LITTER IS FROM ACCREDITED PARENTS, just like they now ask if HIPS are done. Whats even BETTER about this is that the PUBLIC will no longer need to learn what IS or IS NOT an ACCEPTABLE Hip grade for breeding from as the BC Survey will already have done that for them. So ALL they need to ask is will the puppy be ELIGABLE to be issued with a BC Pedigree !!  Now this doesnt Accredit the Litter , but it does Accredit the PARENTS of the Litter, which when dealing with livestock IS THE BEST ANY OF US CAN EVER DO. Unfortunately the KC accredited scheme DEFINATELY DOES NOT EVEN DO THIS.

Best Regards
Sue b

This scheme offers a QUALIFICATION for those GSD that fulfil the criteria. It is a BREEDING QUALIFICATION for the dog.It may be that the name of the qualification is abbrieviated, in the same way a Korung is abbrieviated in Germany from Korklasse 1 or 2 to Kkl. 1 or 2
Perhaps Breed Council Accredited GSD could be abbreviated to BCA 1 or 2. Such an abbreviated qualification can be included next to a dogs name and on its pedigree.

Had a mooch around people - and can say 100% Birmingham & District GSD Association are fully supportive of this proposal.

Has anybody investigated any legal implications, if you have Breed Council Accredited dogs that produce the problems they are accredited for can puppy purchaser sue the Breed Council.
