Archania

by Archania on 21 April 2010 - 13:04

Hi John

I have very little breed knowledge, hence me trying to learn as much as possible about current requirements, breed standards, and seeing various examples.

I do intend to go to both WELKS at Malvern and the GSD league show in leics this weekend, so i can see dogs in the ring. My last experience of showing was about 2001, so i have much to re-learn!.

Will anyone on this forum be attending ? It would be nice to put some faces to names :)

I was not the one taking photos of PD...my friends had the camera but I was also stood close enough to hear what was said. I know my friends where really upset by the manner in which they where spoken too.
Anyway as I said earlier I will remove any photos if you or the other person I wrote to yesterday wish me to do so! (Just tell me which one)

aranchia....hello once again.i will be attending Welks this weekend ,so yu,ll be able to put one face to the name.i too thought that the 1st photo put on mr.leadbetters post was correct to my  and obviously your interpretation of the breed standard.i,m sorry John, but IMO.your dogs do not conform to the standard.....look at the propotions of your animals.leg lenghth looks to me to be just slightly less than 50% to chest depth.....correct props.45%chest depth...55%leg lenghth.lenghth to height ratio......10.9 or at longest 8.5.back straight.....looks to me as if your dog,s back has a dip in the middle.look at the photo of Mutz.and then at the ones of your animals,do yu honestly think they look alike????i dont mean to be rude.aranchia, birmingham city has a judge that prefers the alsatian type and i believe that this show is held at stoneleigh,so maybe yu can attend that one i see this type too and then yu can make up your own mind.the type at Welks will be a mixture of middle of road(correct type)or germanic(also correct)my meaning for M.O.R. is that the owners prefer to have their animals shown at a more leisurely pace and calmer atmosphere,by that i mean no excessive pulling and running at 100mph.for prolong periods of time.see yu on saturday Carole Spelman RHEINMEISTER GSDS.

I prefer the german type of dog for looks and showing without doubt.

I have no knowledge of German type for working trials or obedience, my one and only breed dog (affectionatly nicknamed spam head most of the time), was a bit of a clumsy oaf if im honest and did obedience like yesterday would do and certainly showed no real signs of interest apart from liking being with me. But put him a show ring and he was a proper show off and simply radiated style !.

The other dogs were different, one excelled at obedience, but show him a sleeve and he would give you a look of boredom, the other was a very good trials (TDex) and 'A' obedience dog. The later ones only did working trials and will all of these confirmation was much more like that of Mutz in the picture.

I have my choice of breeder picked out and im more than happy with my choice. Just anxiously counting the days till my puppy is born and i can bring him home !.

I really do need to learn about showing styles. I haven't seen much of the German way of showing, and myself prefered the MOR way, but with that said, it is my intention to show in whatever way is best for the dog and not me. I haven't spent 6 months to find a breeder with the type i like, and the breeding i wanted to wreck its chances in the ring!.

But with all that said, he will be spoilt rotten, want for nothing and have the best of everything. He will be loved and cared for all his life and will first and foremost be my freind and companion - i figure thats whats most important.

Blankit, on another thread, you asked me to comment on this one. Mutz comes close to my ideal GSD.

truckingdog,  For your information, Mutz made VA 2 1970,  and was never sieger,.He was considered one of the pillar's of the breed, along with Canto, Quando, and Marko ,He was considered to have been only sufficiently angulated in croup, & hind quarters,  he passed on good back lines, and was well proportioned.  His progeny was described in the year book 1999, demonstrated great uniformity of type and construction in his progeny. Above all they were distinguished by striking dryness, and firmness of the whole general build. Many offspring were stamped with the sire's typical general appearance, with a resilient and self-confident temperament and  with much natural vitality.
1. Don't consider  your dogs on a Parr  with  mutz.
2. In the 111 years of the breed mutz comes approximately two thirds along the way, what you see now in Germany is the gradual progression of that 111 years.
3 If it has taken you 42 years to reach the point you are at in gsd, you need to take radical steps.
4 you need to improve your stock, as your dogs are much to long, and are short and steep in upper arms, with short croups, etc, etc.

to answer your  question of the top line the, German  breed standard is quit clear >a smooth top line begins from the back of the neck and continuing in a straight line over a well developed wither, and sloping towards the croup without any visible disturbance<,  and so on. That should answer your question, the top line is 90% to do with the correct movement, to understand a dogs top line you have to see it on the move,  there you will see the reason why. Now lets  take a look at your dogs if you put a straight line on their top lines you will see they dip in the middle,  then if you see them move you will see it will not be so effortless, the top line is also pleasing to the eye, as is color,  so I'm sure 10% of  this  also contributes to the slightly arched back when in stance,  (I would sooner have a construction with an arch as opposed to one that dips),  the emphasis must be slightly sloping not roached. Do yourself a favor buy yourself the Urma book , it will be out by now, and the sieger cd,  go to the sieger show,  I as many others were in the same boat as you about 30 years ago. It must be said apart from the animals we eat,  we show  animals that is pleasing to  the eye, the KC has allowed this,  and lead many breeds  down a path of regret,  this is why I would sooner trust the S V with my breeding program than the K C.

Regards Bob 4.

Trucking dog

Have you altered the photos as the dog in pic 2 looks like it as been photo shopped, no3 is way too long for me, and by any breed standard.
