I just want you to know this. 98% of calls for dogs I get these days are requesting dark sable (black sable) dogs with big heads. Please keep in mind that this, just as any other fad is:
1.narrowing down genetic pool
2. invites unintended consequences of breeding for one trade.
3. Unimportant. Color is the least important trade. It will not make your dog to be a better dog.
So please if you are buying a GSD do not worry about the color. That is if you care for the future of the GSD.
Grey sable and other colors, as long as they are deep thick colors, are also beautiful.

Maybe we should ask for rich pigment whether dark or not, the dog in the above picture might not be so dark but the pigment looks so rich and vivid.

What I am saying it is way more dangerous than you think to demand from breeders what is in fashion like "black" sables now. Many dogs who have this color are insufficient elsewhere to begin with and on top of it if you get preoccupied with single trait breeding you will invariably be a witness of an unintended consequences. I know a breeder who was obsessed with hips and eventually produced dwarfism. We are narrowing the genetic pool if we do not learn how to compromise when we breed. The buyers are forcing the breeders into this quagmire and it is up to the breeders to educate and promote variety.
