SueB
You are clearly very distressed on his behalf. It is very commendable and very nice. I am however entitled to form an opinion, and yes in my opinion (I won't insult your intelligence) what he predicted I think has happened.  However, I did not in this instance attempt to impose my opinion, rather let the words sit there and the reader decide. Sue, the quotes to my mind, are quite naturally for MW from a genetic point of view. You decide whether it has come to pass. I would reference below to his article where he says the UK seems incapable of preserving what it produces, and the disappearance of bloodlines that should have been used. Yes, to me it has come to pass. His latest article validates many of my points both here and on other threads, on a stand alone basis, without any interpretation or input from me.

Yes, Sue, he is still quite capable, as evidenced by his article in the BC Magazine 'Comment from Dr M B Willis on some issues affecting the German Shepherd Dog in the UK'.

I see in that article that he says it is high time we stopped regarding the SV as some sort of super power ( I will not comment, as you will accuse me of construing his statement incorrectly no doubt) oh, how I agree.  I also note that he does say that some unsoundness may be attributable to overangulation, but some to excessive pulling, due to double handling which, he says, has done nothing to encourage good movement.

Yep, I still agree with the man.  There is still overangulation and he really doesn't agree with double handling, which seems to be one of the major issues that 'you' (collective) are fighting so hard for, and if indeed I should paraphrase, as far as he is concerned there is a health issue around double handling and the potential effect on a young dog's bones, which, to quote, 'cannot be sanctioned'. So perhaps the KC have now got the support of their view that there is a health issue around double handling. He suggests a firming up of the breed standard, bringing in a precision that will not allow the deviations which currently exist. Hey, what a good idea. Who exactly is to define the standard with this level of precision is however not clear.

He also considers that it may be worthwhile including non-standard colours. How refreshing, and this from a respected geneticist.   With full reflection I do not feel that I did him any dis-service by quoting him in the earlier post. If anything, his latest article confirms my view.

I agree with every statement made in the latest article, though some could be considered quite controversial, what are your views?

Pacosbear

Yes, the same judges that award throughout the year. Whether they are corrupt is a matter for conjecture, and I am sure most have a view either way, but at least with our KC, there is no direct financial involvement with show kennels.

Carole,

What a lovely young lady :)

by noddi on 08 April 2010 - 07:04

thank yu Sue and Dingodog.......Dingodog,so yu do not think that chiki is banana back/roached then?i know that the alsatianist would insist that she is.now i consider this to be a very good picture of chiki aged 18 mths.BUT some that have been in print ie.in the breed council monthly magazine HAVE NOT.the point i,m trying to make is that some photos can present an untrue picture of the animal as can the way they are stacked.DO YU AGREE?it would be nice to meet yu at a show.how about Windsor ?i,m planning to go but only as a spectator.is there anything yu dont like about chiki.lets see if we agree?Carole.ps.this lovely young lady is now a veteran of 7 years.

Carole

I will  put my thoughts here, but no doubt I may come under attack to presume to critique your girl. I stress I only do this at your request....:)

If I am honest I really don't like the stack, and I accept the fact that it is possible that in some cases this can influence a dog's outline. I would really love to see dogs presented for show in a natural stance. I would love to see her standing naturally, I believe that is the only way you can see a true outline, and then see the whole structure in movement to truly judge. Hind angulation? I would probably like a fraction less, but no, she is not banana backed, she doesn't have a convex spine starting immediately behind the withers. In an older dog I would like a shade more substance, but she is just a baby :)  Lovely front, really lovely, and beautiful head.

I am really, really not into alsatians. They are as far away from a GSD as can be to me. The showline generally, I just find has just gone too far (esp in Germany), and all I would like to see is moderation. Interesting to see what will happen to alsatians when judging has to be to a universal standard.

Bless, now a veteran - time goes so fast doesn't it.

Re shows: Anything that necessitates me going through London (I don't do the M25 LOL) probably wont happen. Where and when is the South of England show, as, agility competitions permitting that may be a prospect ?

Dingodog, I certainly have no intention of attacking you. Indeed, as I have kept saying I believe you to be genuine albeit not quite in the loop about things. So far during these debates I believe you may have learned a number of things. One that there are many amoungst us who are reasonable people, who just want what is best for our breed without having to be placed under any form of restriction from running events that would further promote a Health GSD. Unless the KC are protecting their Bank Balance and Position of Priviledge why else would they insist that we ASK THEIR PERMISSION to run these events? We could all have continued to work together happily without any of this unpleasantness if only the KC had been prepared to compromise, if not on Mandatory Health Checks or the Two Tier system (see other thread) if only by removing Item 9 of the Undertaking, all this nastiness (which they have caused) could have been avoided.
Just because the GSD fraternity have always been prepared to FIGHT for what they believe is necessary for their breed, does not mean we wouldnt actually prefer an easy, uneventful , agreeable , simpler life.  If only the KC would allow us to live it.

By the way, I would be interested to know what you think of the dogs in these photo's :-
