Mudwick, my 2 year old is black and tan. I was talking about my 17 week old. He is definitely not black and tan. ;o)
I am questioning the "middle child" my boy who looks all black in the pictures. I had him in nice light today and you could see the lighter colours coming in on the legs and the top of his head. With each week it is getting a bit more noticable so I am really curious to see what happens. I was thinking that he may come out with sable legs and head, but I could be totally wrong. I will try to take some better photos but it's hard to get him to sit still.

From the picture you just posted, I'm not quite sure what he is :). It looks like tan in between his toes, maybe a bi-color? If he's a sable, he's about the darkest sable I've ever seen.

Mudwick, I edited my post above.....I need to get better pictures. It almost looks like he might have a black saddle with red sable legs and head. Black mask. I am almost certain that he won't be as black as he currently is now. Maybe I just say sable because I don't know another way to describe it.

If you really wanna know?
Go snag a couple of guard hairs from different locations on the dog [neck, flank, etc].
Get a really decent light and magnifying glass. If the hair shaft is banded with three different colors, its a sable.
If it has one or two bands, move onto the next hair, as even sables will have hairs with only two bands of color on 'em.
If all the hairs you get keep coming up solid, or with two bands, its not a sable.
If you get three bands, you've got yerself a sable.
However, if he's been solid black since birth, and never been any other color?
Its really, really unlikely he's a sable, and far more likely he's a black that's losing coat color to the sun.
To the gene gurus,
Does the graying gene in dun horses have a complimentary gene in the GSD?

Jack, a dark sable with tarheels. His mother is black so he carries black recessive. His lighter points vary from tan to red.
