Whereas it's true that some good dogs matched with good trainers can get titled in a very short time, be aware that sometimes the title isn't worth the paper it's written on.  I've personally seen a few dogs come back from Germany with titles and nice scores in their scorebooks, and no real comprehension of the exercises.

I will always remember a certain conversation overhead at dinner from a German judge, "Let me tell you how it is in Germany...  600 Euros to the club, 1200 Euros to the judge, and you have your title."

This pay-per-title business is not only unethical but also a disservice to the many honest dog trainers who work so hard to train their dogs.

Finally, bear in mind that in the US there are very few "professional" SchH people.  Most of us do this sport for fun and we have real jobs and families, and we can't progress as fast as someone who has no other work but dogs.

That would be the life... (sigh)

I have seen some of those paid titled dogs - but I have seen some dogs that have come out of Germany that are young and didnt have that titled paid for - they actually know what they are doing...

I am just wondering about those dogs that know what they are doing at such a young age...

Annie said that her dog didn't even know how to sit at 12 months.. That kinda tells me that that pup was just a pup and they didnt work him at all - no teaching what so ever.  and at 12 months the training started - fast learner - just play untl then...that would have to be an exceptional dog...

I wish I could just let my pup's be pups - I don't have that will power - I want to train - train- train.....

"How Do German's Get a SchIII by 20 months of Age"

I don't know, but I'm betting they don't sit around watching TV and posting on PDB after work

Deep pockets and knowing the right people in Germany might help. Is there a minimum age for a Sch title? Someone told me it was 18 months and then you have to wait another month? before trying for the next title.

by happyday on 24 June 2009 - 10:06

I believe minimum age is 18 months for schI  15 months for the BH.

Funny Rik - Not sure what is on TV these days - and most of us have a full time job that allows access to a computer - so posting on PDB is a pleasure that is accomplished when training your dog is impossible...

Forevergsd, you said "Deep pockets and knowing the right people in Germany might help". Do you care to explain that? Who are these "right people" in Germany and how deep would the pockets have to be?

Happyday

My 14 year old Daughter started working with her pup at 9 wk also.
A picture of them doing focus with string cheese.

More Video's from 10wks -> 1yr. www.youtube.com/user/DeejaysOwner

Here at 1 yr, has not started her on a leash, so she does get out of position some.
They could BH with no problem, fast out of motions, nice left turns, with great focus.

I do not like the pressure to title the show lines so fast so they are out of the open class.  To me I think the open class SHOULD be in the Sieger shows like it is in other shows and the working class should be 3+ years old.  I was a at a show recently where a few people were lamenting how many good dogs get ruined because people train them so fast, and a few people basically agreed we'd like something to change.  Then the open class started and there was a really nice bitch that showed up.  The judge asked why she was in the open class and was told they were still in the process of titling the dog.  He rolled his eyes and shook his head.  That sort of thing makes me mad.

I know someone who has titled a dog BH to SchH 3 himself in 22 months (and didn't get the dog until he was 9 months or so I think), but it was not a GSD and the dog has top potential.

The GSDs I have seen personally that were titled very quickly are dogs that could have been so much better but were trained poorly and with a lot of pressure.

This has given me incite, thanks guys.  I am a highly motivated individual and set my goals high.  For myself and for my dogs.  I have been debating with myself,in my head, on how to achieve the ultimate - for Me - Sch III at 20 months.  But, I want my dogs to be happy baby's and be strong in the sport....  I believe in pressure - but does to much pressure mean I sacrifice "quality" in their training and would this pressure be applied to soon at a young age to accomplish my goal mess my pup up?  Not sure about that statement, but after I thought about it, not sure if my DRIVE will change any in regards to My desires...But I don't guess there is any sure fire answer to the question and have to keep in mind each dog is different - and when the dog is ready for that title it will be achieved- at 20 months old or at what ever age over that...  I will be happy at any achievement they make....

Happy Day
