You can easily start training pups from 8 weeks........start with the basics, toilet training etc. but remember that young pups, like kids, have a pretty short attention span and really only want to play. Whatever you choose to do make sure it's fun for the pup and one thing at a time, dont overload his brain and dont expect too much at first.

I personally think that it would be far too early to specialize.......ie Schutzhund, Show etc until the pup is at least 4/5 months old. Watch him for his natural aptitude....he may show early interest in a lot of things, retrieving his toys and bringing them back to you for example, this is something you can work on by introducing commands. Teach him to sit.and come but make it part of his play. Loads of patience when he doesn't get things right and loads of fuss when he does something good!

DO NOT take him out and about until he has had his shots as Suenicc rightly says and then you can start to get him walking on the lead to heel.  One of the traits I have seen in my GSD's is the willingness to learn. They love to try and please you and try hard to understand.  Suenicc is also very right when  it comes to other dogs cowing your pup. This happened to me and my Viggo when he was about 4 mths. My friends two rescue GSD's came bounding over when I was walking him and terrified him. It happened in a flash........I didn't see them coming. He wet himself and I think it set him back a good while when it came to socializing with other dogs. All my fault....young pups look to their owners for protection and I failed him.

Get him enrolled in a basic puppy traing class at first where he can socialize with dogs of his own age  that pose no threat to him.  It will also aid his socializing with people. You are gonna be with like minded people and you can learn from each other. You can specialize a bit later on when his character and temperament begin to develop a bit more.

I would recommend getting an extending lead and let him explore the undergrowth.startle a few birds etc whilst you remain in control. The big wide world is a fascinating place for a young pup , full of strange smells, sights and sounds and dangers. Use your common sense.

I envy you. My dog is now 2yrs and has just won his gold obedience. ( In the UK)  We both enjoy our training sessions together but  I still look back at his first little successes with pleasure. Like your child taking his first steps or speaking his first words. Have fun.....would love to hear of his progress later.
