Interesting thread.

by retiredsarge on 24 April 2011 - 21:04

This is a very interesting thread! I was just sitting down saying to my self, what lines do I want to bring into my program? I have jsut had a great letter from Varuk vom Salztalblick and my female, and the drives at 11 weeks are quite impressive. Clearly not puppies that can just go to any home. And, if you are lookng to make a better working dog, do you ignore the Czec dogs? I was always taught to look at the kennel names. Karthago, Tiekerhook (sp?), and others who consistently have produced good working dogs.
So is it the J litter of Talka Marka or do you look at other offspring from the same breeding? And we can't ignore that some people are better at raising and imprinting puppies than others. Which is why I look for kennel names who consistently compete and place in the events such as the BSP. As breeders, I am sure we want OUR puppies to be the ones 20 years from now. But as for now, the dogs who I think will have the most genetic influence over our breed from the working perspective:

Javir, JimBean, Ellute, Eros, Bomber, and Frankie

50% the great Tom line

You're right Steve, but the Ellute/Eros dam, Aline, has produced some other good dogs with different sires. Not the depth in the litter that they got with the E litter, but still some decent dogs. Tom is a good one to have in the line. On her side I think it's Troll (not the Haus Milinda one) that is the key. I think her other litters from a different sire were to Pike.

It has an effect on people as far as being able to see dogs. To be able to see 50 dogs training in a weekend is not possible. Maybe that number is too high for one weekend, but when you can travel a half hour and see more dogs than most people here in the states see in a couple of years in training is a huge benefit.

Jeff
No' a little more than half an hour anything from 1 to 3 hours to get to the clubs at most and Yes, i am spoilt for choice,
But thats Life, Just think Belgium would fit in a little corner of one of your States over there, so look what we are missing
And yesterday i missed the 2nd Selection Trial for the WUSV through another commitment that was 2 hours drive away

I would love to have access to a solid knpv lined male, but I haven't seen too many of them made available to us in the States, and maybe because the cost would be too high. But I think if we are looking at working lines, we may want to consider other types of titles beyond Sch/IPO.

Ok Jeff - I see your point on the travel - I guess it does have an affect on the dogs that we might see in 20 years - I hadn't really thought about it in that way - thanks for giving me another perspective.

No U.S. dog will ever be of any influence in the overall workingline pedigrees, unfortunately. That is due to people continuing to import and not using what we have over here.
With that being said, these are my picks: Javir, Jimbeam and Bomber (for the simple reason being that they have already been used extensively) and what I have seen and heard on the German working forums Falk vd Woelfen, Paska vom Salztalblick (my personal favorite besides Buster Adelmannsfelder Land ;-D), Ellute vd Mohnwiese, Jucan von Peroh, Lasco vom Westfalenspross (who still sired litters at age 12 - along with sister Luna known for longevity) and Ero vom Fuchsgraben. I am sure that I will remember a couple more later but these are the dogs which have been used a lot in Germany over the past couple of years which come to mind.
Pillars in the breed, like Fero or Tim/Troll etc. won't be identified until much later and long after they are gone.
