Where are all of the civil GSD? It seems all sport and family dog. I am looking for a old style hard civil dog that really is a protection dog.

Paul

Your question is vague, are your referring to an untrained "natural protection dog" or a trained protection dog that is capable of civil work?

I have posted this video before, have a look at it and let us know if this is what you are referring to.http://www.youtube.com/canczechdogs#p/u/18/LGTxEOBWsnU

thank you

Who wants to be in the shoes of that man !! I bet he found himself a decent job and quit the dangerous business he used to do especially as the good dogs are more in numbers and well trained, lol. Very nice clip and a precious dog.

As Vikram said they are out there.

Everyone has their ideal dog, every dog is different, combining bloodlines can be a gamble and r aising them too if you don't know what you are doing.... I love schutzhund it is a well disciplined and complex sport but I still like real protection dogs, my ideal dog is one that is friendly and civil.

They are out there.  My personal bitch that I bought as a young pup had no drive up until a year old, she grew into a fantastic bitch, so smart, will pick up any item off of the floor that I ask her and she will either put it in the trash, on the table, in a drawer or in my hand, she loves kids, super friendly but she will bite without the sleeve and she produces it, so she is a service dog, family pet and personal protection.

She is going to have puppies soon I am so excited/nervous I don't know what to do with myself!  I                         bred her to a Branko Salztalblick son, I am hoping to find the perfect puppy out of her, one that will surpass her mother, if possible.  (I'm sure all dog lovers have had that one dog that changes you forever and is simply irreplaceable.)

Research lines if you haven't already, study other dogs, look into PSA, etc.

Sorry I know my post wasn't much help, I have been up all night.

I understand the sporty type dogs, but why would a hard civil GSD not be a family dog.  Are you looking for a one man type of dog, that doesnt like kids who are in his pack?

Trouble...good questions.  Some think that if the dog is friendly (s)he is incapable of being a protection dog.  In my opinion a dog that feels comfortable around strangers and children has good confidence and not easily threatened...a dog like that and with the right protection training in prey, defense, fight drive has the potential to be a good protection dog.

I have heard people tell me that their dog is mean, and would bite (truth is they'd probably crack under pressure) and the dog is unapproachable.
What is your opinion on this?  Would you want a personal protection dog to be approachable or just hates everyone?  My vote is for the confident dog that doesn't want to attack everyone, to me that is an unreliable dog.  I trust Alexa with my life, and with my nephews life.  But I did make a mistake with her, I socialized her too much, lol...she wants to say hello then work but I have done some simulations and she passed.

I like both the cicvil and the sport dogs but if I have to pick one out I think it is easier to find a cicvil dog than an intense prey dog

I myself like to have an intense prey line of dogs that still can protect if neccecery I think it is rare to find a really intense prey dog that has a whole lot of prey and hunt drives

They are out ther..dont make for high scoring dog in sport.

by destiny4u on 29 May 2011 - 17:05

most civil gsds are still out there doing sport to become civil the dog needs to be turned on that way if the dog is not pushed into being civil u wont see that side of it depending on the dogs thresholds

i am sure there are dogs out there that will bite and attack anyone on site i would never want a dog like that though

civil dogs should have some prey drive also for training and fun and strength yes?

a lot of wusv dogs are civil when they want to be so i am sure many civil dogs can be great sport dogs also just depends on the individual
