Jeff, Sandro has been coming out the past few training sessions. He is a great decoy and a wealth of knowledge. I hope he comes out more often, I enjoy training with him. Ben is doing a good job for a first timer with Sahara. She is a littermate to the male the you saw at the trial. His leash work still needs help, but he is working hard with her and learning. Almost got Sandro bit, though. That litter has a lot of drive and potential, we just repeated the breeding a couple of weeks ago.

So where are the videos of everyone's dogs in action?

So Jeff, how do we go about changing that? I'm going to make a comment please sch people do NOT get offended.  I do think sch is a very good sport I have never competed in schutzund.  Yes the training for the street dogs is started basically the same way but that is where it ends.  Once the dog is biting we stop letting them see the sleeve, we throw things at them and hit them with things and still expect them to go in for the bite, and not hesitate.  Because of the kind of work we want these dogs to do and do it well we need A LOT of drive, preferably prey.  We also need a dog that is confidant enough to think on his own and know he can handle the situation on his own.  There are times the k9 gets to the bad guy before the handler catches up and if he is sitting there waiting for a command when he finds him your dog is defenseless.  I need a dog that does not need a command to work you pop him out of the car and he is on the job and he does it because he loves the "game".  It seemed to me and I could be wrong that most of the dogs there were not thinking on their own.  They constantly looked at the handler to get the command.  I think it is a great sport, but just like any sport some people like basketball some football.  That doesn't mean the football people can't respect basketball and appreciate it, just not their thing... I love watching sch and I know it is not easy to train a dog well enough to compete so it is quite an accomplishment, and I love to watch it.  But everybody comparing the too is like saying a pro football player is no good if he can't also compete in the NBA.

A GSD doing Belgian Ring ?? It will be interesting to see if he titles.

by czechdog9480 on 03 August 2011 - 03:08

My brother was starting his previous GSD, 'Jack' from one of my litters, in NVBK, trained with the group until the dog was about a yr old then stopped training due to the group fizzling. He's going to be starting his current yearling in PSA. I'll see if I can find any vids of Jack training NVBK, he scaled the full palisade at 7 or 8 months. A bit too defensive for the sport but he was doing OK.

He was doing this in Belgium ?

Also, and don't freak out, "too defensive" ?? Define that for me. When I hear people say that, the dog got scared under pressure and popped off the bite. It happens for sure. Usually we just train past it, as either someone pushed the dog too hard (usually) or the dog had just never seen (whatever that was) before, and you just keep going. They usually figure it out.

Sad that he is going into PSA. But remember, I am greedy. : P

Nice video, Jeff. Esko looks like a real nice dog. How old is he now?

I like the Belgian video, gotta get me a few inner tubes. Nice dog in that video. A GSD with good grips could do well in NVBK. Interesting sport, I love the biting techniques of a lot of those dogs.

Esko turned two in June.

I cannot believe they are even bothering with a GSD. He must be a good one.

There are a lot of GS titled in ring sports here in Europe, we don't see them as much as malinois but there are some excelent dogs! I can only speak about 1 i know, it's a tiekerhook dog, he's titled in MR II. Right now he's training for MR III!
He started competing last year and was national champion in MR I, won the national cup and finished in 6th at the world cup. This year he finished 3rd in MR II and was 2nd at the national cup.
He's an excellent dog full of drives!
