Quote: we now have people breeding German shepherds for ring....what an absolute joke....and here I thought a german shepherd was an all around dog....my bad:-)

I originally thought this as well. Not really true. I have seen too many with way too high thresholds fail to make it. Now is this the training, or the dog ? I am way way to stinking far away to go see all the dogs I would like to see just in this country.

Then, I think that ring is too scarce for some people to even try. Lets face it, logistics for dog sport really blows here. Some people get lucky, but I cannot tell you how many polls I have seen on how far one way do people travel, and it almost always averages out to 2 hours.

I am breeding dogs to do ring. My first litter is 6 months old, and I am without a decoy currently, so I have nothing to go on to tell you as of right now. I can only say that they seem to be going along. I will see when I start training the jumps, and start working with a decoy.

I challenge you to take a GSD and go and do ring, if you have a club anywhere near you. It is not as easy as it looks, and takes a different dog, at least as far as I can tell. Maybe I am all fucked in the head, and you will go out and crush it. That would be cool too. I would love to see more GSD in Mondio and FR.

If your dog has a Sch3 he can cross over to MR3 right away. That is another way to go.

my point is that all the German shepherds come from the same lines....I have worked some exceptional dogs. They are agile and work with there handler. I wish we had ring around here. When I first started schutzhund I was looking into ring as I owned a Beauceron.
Does ring take a more agile dog...yes...is it more challenging...somewhat...I'd like to see a tracking phase....I believe there are plenty of shepherds that could compete...just never given the opportunity to do such!

By the way...I like your breeding!

distance is another thing....my schutzhund field is five minutes away!

I have to fix Esko's pedigree, there are NO SHOWLINES in his fathers pedigree. He has FR3 dogs back to the mid 70's. Someone thinks they are cute and keeps adding showline dogs in there. LOL

That is something that is out there. There are some dogs that have Sch lines 2 or 3 generations back. But there are a lot, that are made up of FR dogs that go back to the 60's before you start seeing Sch dogs. Some even farther back.

The Fr are not like the Germans. They will put FR3 on a pedigree, but leave out MR3 or Campagne. Some leave off pistage, which is your tracking. Campagne, which I am sure I am not spelling correctly is FR in the woods, and there is a bit of tracking in there. It is very hard, and the jumps are whatever is about that high, like bushes, or hedge. There is nothing familiar to help cue the dogs, and you see some of them struggle with that. They do it in the city, and then go to a park, and it looks all relaxed. I saw one video where there were two people holding a rope to keep people back when the exercise was going on, just strolling down a street. Pretty cool.

A field 5 minutes away. I cannot imagine how many people are hating on you right this moment. : )

Damn Juron, a field 5 min away? Your dogs should be the best of the best with that setup. Wow.

hmmm...takes more than a field to make them the best. I do get to work on blinds and voraus but everything else you need a helper.

GSD for ringsport? You bet.

Two weeks after his good showing in Tavaux at the French Ring championships Budy won the Primo Orlandi Mondio 3 trial ( an important mondio trial) with a score of 372.66 and will be competing next weekend in the Campagne championships. That's GSD versatility.

This following GSD dog got a score of 378 at Peujard this past weekend and won the trail.

Jeff, in what way does it take a different dog to do ring, and are you sure this difference is a positive thing in other working areas? I guess we can say different programs want different things, but still we see dogs from SCH-background doing ring/KNPV, or the opposite, so in the end I guess there are more similarities than differences at least in the bitework for a good ringdog versus SCH or other discipline. On the other hand the entire germany is breeding for SCH so don´t know if that is preserving a versatile GSD so much better;)

I like french ring, and wasn´t aware there is actually GSDs with many generations of mostly ringdogs, most dogs I was aware of had pretty much recent german dogs mixed in the pedigree, and then maybe they aren´t that different from other dogs you can find with similar lines. But what I´ve seen there seems to be good and less impressive ringdogs regardless if they have much french dogs in the pedigree or more of the german, so maybe it´s hard  to say SCH-dogs makes the dog less suited for ring or a lesser dog, at least not for all areas.

This seems to be a nice ringdog with much french dogs, some years ago, don´t know if this is a typicall ringdog or just one of the nice dogs you can see in other venues too, nalic du vierzonnais,

But I also saw another dog, this one, that seemed to do ring 3 well, there is videos of him online too, but he is of german SCH-liners,
