Ouch!! I had thought she just got into it with one of the other dogs... I'm shocked that she didn't make any noise - ears are sensitive!

They are sensitive. I think sometimes it bugs her, still. Sometimes she will hold it funny and there's never anything wrong w/it I can find. I don't think I've ever heard her yelp or show any other kind of pain. Hell, she delivered puppy #2 while she was stealing pizza from my toddler. That's why she makes me nervous when she has 5 hours of intermittent contractions and no puppy- she's the last dog who would tell you something was really wrong.

But no, no other dog did that to her. She gets along with everyone, so long as they are respectful, and I keep her away from other females w/similar temperament (like Qira) and I don't have any males who would ever do any real damage to a female. They'll put them in their place if they're really pushing the envelope, but none would out and out rip off half her ear like that. It doesn't look nearly as bad now as it did. It's an optical illusion; there was a huge, horseshoe/bite-shaped chunk missing right off the top outside part. The vet trimmed it all to the highest point and made that the new high point of her ear. The other advantage to doing that was that it would heal cleanly and hopefully straight, and hopefully be less likely to continue to have tissue die as it healed. It healed perfectly. She probably would have had to have more removed had I left it to curl up and heal by itself. Yuck. Still makes me shudder. My perfect 'Pri.  Aren't I superficial?  LOL

Hah! She sounds like such a character... giving birth while stealing pizza and chasing sticks... Poor Brix. :P

I'd probably be pretty upset if something like that happened too... when Chey got fixed, she managed to scrape her nose leather off on the kennel she was in. Black cat with a pink nose - attractive.
But thankfully the black grew back!

Capri's ear gives her character - makes her look tough! Like you (or she) said, "you shoulda seen the other bitch!" LOL! And at least I won't get her mixed up with any of the other dogs (which I am seriously worried about doing with Qira and Caleb, *coughcough*). I can definantly see your point though...

She's gorgeous! I don't think the ear detracts at all from her appearance. If anything, it adds a kind of "I'm beautiful, but don't f with me" expression to her face ;-)

Jen,I seperate between the basement and upstairs. Crates for those who need them. Already picking a spot to fence off for rotaton in the yard for the intact males. I do not really care for females and as much and rather take the time and trouble to have males. Believe me, although Aurick is a wonderful dog, he's a shithead.I maybe I'm crazy, but I enjoy that part of him....keeps me on my toes!

Yeah, Cat, I used to think like that, too. Now, I think I will let my current ones die off and not replace them; I'll just keep one "main" male from now on. When I had more time (before my son was around) I liked to rotate them and take one to work each day, but now that things have changed,  I feel that they would each be better off w/out the other one, so I won't do that again. I just feel like dividing my attention all the time has too many downsides. I was very fortunate for many years to be able to rotate like I could and always have one at work, so no one was getting the short end of the attention stick, but w/the ones I have now, divided attention is simply not enough and I have to be honest and say that it's not optimal. I do the best I can but I feel guilty and would not do it again. If I did, I would have a huge age gap and make sure the older one was a finished product before introducing another one. Your son handles Aurick a lot though, doesn't he? That must be very helpful. In my situation, I'm the only one they look to.

I never liked females as well either, but Capri changed all that. She's like a male in her bonding, willingness to please, toughness, but has the easygoing, level head of a female when it comes to house manners, being protective of children, etc.

Mollyandjack & Dawulf, thanks for trying to make me feel better about her ear. It didn't help, but thanks anyway. LOL!

Jen I am crying with you.  My Old female who passed last year had a beautiful head with perfect ears at around 7 years of age she got a hematoma and the ear flopped, I was devasted she could care less.  I looked into surgery but they couldn't gaurentee it would stand, so I opted not to put her through it.  Capri still is a beauty though :)

I remember that, Lyn. We're really being ridiculous, but at least we know it. LOL.  I think I was so upset because I had only had her a short time, only had a few pictures, and soooo many people were anxiously waiting to see her...it was just really upsetting. I would've made the same choice you did in that situation though; this was more a combo of making it look better and minimize the chance of problems down the road.

So, do you want your very own Brix, Lyn?

by LynOD on 15 September 2011 - 17:09

I won't even say how tempted I am.  But I know the reality of owning a dog like Brix, and working a full time job and leaving a dog like that kenneled all day is certainly not ideal.  They want to work and work and work.....  Jules has a flexible schedule and can take Brix to work with him makes it alot more doable.  And then i look at Jules and sometimes he is sooo tired because Brix had him up a 4 am because he wanted to train LOL  I'll take the easy way out and stick with my border collie who sleeps beautifully is quiet in the house and although requires daily exercise I can tire her out unlike Brix who never tires LOL.  But thanks for tempting me, I know how wonderful they are:)
