First pick in the litter cost $10,000 US dollars - Page 3

No different than selfish, self-absorbed people paying $100K for a collectible car or $10K for botox. Every day I see people driving around in custom golf carts that cost in excess of $15K. Last year in Tampa a few hundred homeless people died in the back streets while some idiot paid $30K for a bottle of rare wine. 

Fleischer, any breeder for that matter, can ask any price they want for a dog or puppy; only a newbie or someone with more money than sense will pay $10K for a puppy. That is the target market for a $10K puppy.  
 

The price is ridiculous for any puppy...unless it poops gold. $2000 is the maximum I see for the litter of this quality but Ober's progeny should be generally discounted as compared to other and better VA producers.  The plan of introducing new blood into VA lines in 2010 and picking Ober to be VA1 backfired as he produced nothing remarkable to date. So just because the dog is a VA dog, it does not mean anything. We must look at the progeny, siblings and lines such dog comes from and then consider the entire picture to make our decision, which in best case is an educated guess and our hope for the best.  As a side note, I have Ober's daughter with perfect hips and elbows that is not breed worthy. She will be going to a pet home after her spaying procedure.

Did Bill actually offer you a puppy for $10K or did he tell you that if you wanted the pick puppy from that litter it would cost you $10K?  Big difference.

Keith's question is an interesting one that I, too, would like the answer to. 

I don't care what people spend their money on, really I don't.  I have no problem if someone wants to spend 100K on a rare car or customize their golf cart, or build a 10,000 sq. ft. cabin in the woods.  A private jet, swimming pool, whatever man, if you can afford it and it makes you happy, go ahead

But those are much diffrent I think, they are something different or rare.  GSD puppies aren't rare.  They're everywhere and most of them grow up to be a loved house pet at best.  SHow me a litter of puppies at 10K and I can show you 100 litters for a tenth or less of the price that are the same or better.

if some fool wants to spend that, go for it.  I doubt they'll ever know or care just how big of an idiot they are for doing so.

Maybe the breeder wasn't really interested in selling you the pick pup so they gave you a ridiculous price. 

zdog, you are are right about how people spend their own money and it's none of my business. I just wish the haves would be a bit more generous with the have nots. When I read an article about a have spending $30K for a bottle of rare wine on the same page of the newspaper with another article that relates how many people died on the streets of Tampa, it offends me. Less than a mile from where I  live there is a garage packed full of collectible cars that never get on the road.  I can't help but think how many lifes could have been made so much better using the millions those cars cost a man in his late 80's.

We are such a selfish society......it is obscene how we treat the the growing population of the poor among us.

To get this back on topic - GSD puppies are for sale everywhere for all prices, no shortage of GSD's in any part of the US as far as I know. 
 

It is upto you to spend your money in whatever way you want.  But I personally would never pay over $2K for a puppy, regardless of how the breeder builds up his case.  A puppy is a crap-shoot at best, and paying such monies is not a wise thing to do.

PS:  I am not a big fan of showlines and when such puppies are sold for $3K etc., I am certainly not impressed.  When they start asking for $10K etc for a pup, it would be difficult to not laugh.

I like showlines. I don't find it any more laughable that a SL breeder asks 10K for a puppy than I do that a WL broker overcharges a client for a defective dog.

Money is also a very relative thing, obviously 10k is pretty damn high however people have paid literally 100k plus for dogs. If someone has the money and are dead set on a particular dog or item them well...I guess go for it. My wife sells cats that are significantly more than 10k and if there is a market and demand then well, capitalism dictactes play ball. I would hope that regardless of price the dogs are at very least being bred correctly.

My honest opinion I would never buy a GSD puppy for 10k a fully trained dog sure, however if your heart is set on a particular dog for whatever reason and you have the money then hell if it makes you happy.
