Zep,

"I mean given the money and the time and the right circumstance could my pup be a VA1 in Germany? Maybe. Is it "in his genes", maybe, I don't know and probably will not know.
"

Actually, your pup could never be VA in germany or USA. His sire has no titles, thats immediately eliminates the possibility for VA even if the pup himself has VA structure/temperament/titles etc.

There was a woman who came into my work Thursday, with her 15 month old male ASL GSD, that she is showing in AKC and has all intentions of breeding him....as she DRAGGED him through the door and he nearly peed himself trying to get the hell out of the store. Mind you they come in weekly.. (Its a petstore, so the atmosphere is very calm and welcoming..no reason for him to want to get out so bad) She doesnt plan to work him, but he has "such and such points towards his CH title!"

*sigh*

What isn't cool is to cherry pick only what you like from his breeding recommendations and throw out the rest

And exactly why not?  In training, it it not kosher to borrow from various methods, and use what works best for yourself?  BESIDES, Stephanitz was NOT an accomplished breeder.  Some folks should really quit referring to him like he's the pope.

Blitzen, how do you know what fits in my world? It would nice to have discussion without the hostility and defensiveness you seem to display. Why are you so cranky when people don't conform to your world?

by Blitzen on 28 February 2012 - 17:02

Joanro, why so sensitive? I don't see you considering anyone else's feelings when you trash showlines and those of us who show them. BTW I didn't say I know anything  about your world, don't know how many dogs you have, how many litters, don't care. I said if you  have more than 2 bitches and don't cull your litters, etc then you are not following the Capt's guidelines.

Get a grip. I don't think this exchange is what Gustav had in mind. The Captain's book is an historical record, not an instruction manual to be followed to the letter since times have changed. The motivation of ethical breeders of today and the good Capt are the same, to preserve and produce true working GSDs.

For every good breedworthy gsd that is not titled. There are 10 more that are as good that are titled. I prefer to purchase from the latter. Kurt

The breed "As a whole" has went downhill as the catpt desired but there are plenty dogs out there as good or better than dogs of his time.. one has to do nothing more than research and purchase what an individual likes in a dog. In one sense the gsd may be more versatile than it ever was. Anything from a couch potatoe to a "MONSTER" is available lol...... some cost more than others..... but whatever you want is there. Kurt

A good example is everyone on here.. everyone claims they have what they want and what is ideal as a gsd. If you have what you consider an example of what a gsd should be then what is the problem? What someone else owns is of no concern to me. Kurt

Good point vomeisenhaus. I was enjoying this thread until it got slightly off topic the last couple pages. There are a huge many people enjoying their GSD's today as family pets / protection, farm dogs,
flock herders or guardians, obedience, agility, flyball, dock diving, tracking, various sports, SAR, police, military, all fields of service work, & even hunting dogs. Many of these dogs are enjoying more field
of activity / work with their handlers. It's not the dog most of the time with limitations but the handlers skill or lack of training. I see well bred GSD's doing many wonderful jobs + sports / activities.
