Schutzhund Dog and Personal Protection Dog

I just wanted some opinions on this subject. Can you have a Schutzhund Dog and used it for personal protection or train it to become a personal protection dog? I know this can be a touchy subject for some trainers. I have heard yes and I have heard no so I just wanted to get some opinions.

some people feel that a PP dog is a dog that will bark at command, if you feel the same, the answer is yes, for me training for schh and training for PP dog CANNOT go together, as schh is prey oriented and PP is not

It really depends on the dog. If your dog has a suspicious personality he could be PP simply because he can discriminate. If he is unable to discriminate then no, not so much PP as SchH which is a sport.

He has a suspicious personality when it comes to strangers walking around our neighborhood or people walking next to my car if we are at a gas station or public place like that.

You are the second person that has told me that. The first is a Schutzhund trainer who has been training dogs since the 70s.

I don't beleive in doing bite work alone. I do NOT do bite work with my dog. I always use a helper.

also depends on age.. bloodlines and socializing.. they have to be social to do either.. cant bite someone that they have never encountered or is afraid of! So good thing to do is get a good base of socializing..to do either the sport or the protection training.... just my opinion !

just about every pp dog out there comes from some kind of shutzund dog im sure

Well I have owned or have personal experience with many dogs who were trained in schutzhund only who would do pp work without hesitation. A few of these dogs were lga and wusv participants and anyone who thinks a dog trained in schutzhund only won't do ppd work is welcome to come test a few dogs I know of. They will quickly give you a one way trip to the ER.
