I don't think anyone was implying that a chi or terrier were effective "protection", just that they will give it their best to protect their owner, which the OP's GSDs failed to do. Although I will say that a SFT hanging on to a guy's nuts with a grip that would rival a pit bull's would if nothing else, give a person time to pick up a gun a blow his head off! Lol

GIG:

MY dogs were trained by ME....not by any professional  with the guidance of Larry Filo, David Moore, Adrian Ledda,  Houston Harris CO certified SO OFFICER, and a Judge from Germany at a schutzhund trial club evalutation week end at Spring Valley where I got my kick to learn how to buy , how to breed and how to handle a gsd for my safety in sport and in my venues I was in.

I trained with Gal CO SO and Harris CO SO and I was drilled for two years by David Moore from Shrevport Fire and PD.
MY dogs were trained by no one and they were hard hard hard dogs bred by Larry Filo to do the job intended for a real gsd.

I never ever had any problem commanding any dog I bred or had in my possession..I went from a high end fashion expert and model to a woman with a leash and one of the best and hardest gsd bred by me.  I had many mentors now gone , and many years of help from other breeders as how to pick a pup and how to sell a pup to my customers.

I was lucky , but the way you handle any pup , the pup you buy and the knowledge YOU HAVE is all in one bundle. YOU cannot give a  9mm gun to a young kid and expect him tohit a target..You must educate him and he must practice and the gun must be in good working condition...SAME with a german shepherd..

Not all people reading this want a HOT german shepherd, but I have posted pictures of ZU with babies, and with other dogs and with people , and most of my gsd were very social and could be with us in the parks and on training on site with many kids but to think one could come near me and hit me or push me or even raise their voice, it was not gonna happen without a gsd on your foot and inbetween me and you..

I do not advocate everyone getting a HOT dog...but yu have to have a well knowledgeable person to show you , educate you how to PICK a puppy and what to look for if you  do not want a back yard pet.  NOT ALL GSD WILL PROTECT YOU..

if YOU do not know what the breed means , how they are bred and what lines to look for and into, or even how to test a puppy , then I still stand to say...YOU WILL GET A DOG THAT WILL NOT COME TO YOUR AID.........

AND  if you are given a dog already with an Attitude, AND  YOU ARE NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE IN TRAINING IT,,YOU WILL BE LOSING THE DOG THAT CAME TO YOUR AID.............

Blitzen, me too! I had SFTs that would not hesitate to bite and hold on... as high as they can jump and not release. Forget choking them off..Just made them bite harder! The best way to get them to release was to lift an ear and PUFFFF as hard as you can into their ear. It works ninety percent of the time! I still do that with some of these present gsd pups I have, can't pry the little sucker's mouth open and don't want to hurt them, that's little five, six week old pups. What worked to get a Smooth to release works just as good on these pups, just get your face out of the way quick so's they don't re-grip on it. Lol

Gigante, you're welcome anytime! SFT= Smooth Fox Terrier....toughest big dog in a little dog suit I ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with! More heart and attitude, which they are more than capable of backing up, than you could stuff into a lot GSDs. Canines so big they stick out under their lips and full compliment if teeth to go with them... I call my GSDs "big brown fox terriers" as a complement!

joanRO:  THAT  ear stuff never worked with Konig or Bear, my korbelbach man..

I had to work extra long and hard to get the teeth jaw held off...

WHen I was in training with Harris Co SO and some of the officers from Gal CO we, practiced at the League city park.

Konig was 2 yrs old, and we were in bite training with me trying to learn how to  hold  him when he saw a decoy come out of the bathroom or out from behind a building or using the blinds he knew someone was coming out of one of them and I had to eventually wrap my leash around a light pole to hold him till the command was given. THe whole group laughed every training session at me being drug across the park on my stomach with Konig on the other end of the leash..I never turned loose but I did have my ego split...lol

After almost a year of me struggling and not able to attain the level of ability of me only 5'4" lady in her 40's with a stick of dynamite  to gain control over him, I had to let Konig go to work with, on consignment , HArris CO SO, so called trainer , not a certified one.
I could not keep a dog who even though he was obedient in my presence and I could control him in daily life but if the situation turned to a threat, I had no contol over him.
NOT a dog I wanted. SO I trained his sons and daughters and got what I wanted. TOUGH, bonded , obedient, fun, caring and love people but Katy bar the door if I needed one of them to come to MY AID> I carried one in my truck any time it cranked and no one ever had any doubt as to WOULD my dog come to my aid.....

Later I broke the case on that so called trainer, as  he stole and sold Konig , somewhere for  $7,000.00 and my heart broke along with thank GOD, the pups he had sired that year, had no dad., and I lost my foundation sire. I raised 4 litters from him before this happened and kept and used them to carry on his line and to add to it a little bit more civil , able to be use by me and my needs and did I ever have great ones.

The moral of this story:   If you have more dog than you can NOT handle or control, there is someone else who can and it is not the dog for  you....
The pups  I bred later were almost the same hardness, just not so FIGHT agressive and so stubborn for my abilities. I never trained any of my dogs to do any PPT. THEY were trained higly in obedience and they clung to my back pocket so the bond I had kept them able to be ready to come to MY AID anytime the need arose. Their genetics kicked in and they did what I wanted a gsd to do.

There was a sign on my front gate that said:

If found here tonight, you will be found still here in the MORNING..........

I , of course, give kudos to the breed lines I was introduced to and the mentors who trained me.
It boils down to can your dog withstand hits, kicking, threats, gunfire, beating by an intruder and take that intruder down , as one says in PD work, and keep them down until you say   Release,   AUS,  Looss it< or what ever you use?>

YR Having read and enjoyed your posts for years, my point exact, you got skills... honed. :)  I agree if there is a spark in the dog right out of the box you cant just expect it to become a flame way down the road when you need it... Without the nurture.

Thanks
My dogs made me see the WORLD in a whole different LIGHT and I have met and experiecnce things NO ONE else would have had I not taken the ONE STEP forwards and let David MOORE order my ZU from Larry FILO.

After that , the icing on the cake was with whipped creme and a BIG CHERRY...

Hard ,hard work, lots of money spent, lots of miles on a 1 ton GMC truck , lots of trust in Schutzhund club and one GOOD GERMAN JUDGE, and many friends thru the years and tons of clients on a list that I will have my kids frame when I am gone.

MY family ,my friends , and my will to achieve, turned the dog world into a Blessing for me.

I still have 8  of them and am proud of the  Breed. A breed of Dignity, Loyality, Supreme Intelligence and the LOVE you will not ever get from a human.
They do not talk back and they love me Without reserve or any agenda..

Thanks
I love sharing pictures and stories in hopes the newcomers find something that gives them the URGE to do better, better and they can say   My GSD are "

                                             HEADS ABOVE THE REST!!"

              Excellence has it's Rewards
GIGANTE:  ONe other point I make, is when you breed the dog that scares the ones you come upon , by its stance, its demeanor but hidden is the heart of a child.

WHEN this picture was taken many years ago, I use to take my gsd after a session in Houston, to the PETSMART in Houston..ONLY there was a once a year a professional PHOTOGRAPHER who came to Petsmart and you could buy real professional pictures from them.
SO Yellowrose loaded her KONIG and ZU kids and got into line.
THE photographer and his helpers took one LOOK at ZU and BOZO and all headed to back room. THEY informed me I had to place my two gsd on the table infront of the drop and they would shoot from afar......SO all my photos that are professionally taken except at AKC one year were placed by me in the positions and as BOZO , ZU's and KONIGS son, the one over her back said..THAT suit him fine..he didn't like any of them...HIS attitude showed the minute he saw all three of them....SO always listen to your dogs voice, his eyes, his ears and READ YOUR DOG>
THIS was Zu and BOZO...now at the gate waiting.....No one in Petsmart wanted anywhere near either of them but that was their loss...ZU could sit in a baby crib ...not BOZO...but he was fine if you were a trustworthy person.

Zu turned on the ON button..David Moore and helper Kevin, who taught me the importance of a relationship between me and my dogs made the training more reliable . It is very important when you train your german shepherd for your home or sport to be sure you not allow any  GRAY" areas in training , and without using  ABSOLUTE ACTIONS and reactions in training sessions, the  results of  your training will be unpredicatable .  THIS is in home work, sport work and on the streets. MOST owners of gsd do not understand this and the result on the OPS surprise his dogs did nothing is why...I stand  firm......Educate and train the owner what is expected first before you hand them a pup to  TRAIN.

YR, about "that ear stuff"..... I never said that's how I teach an out to a dog.....if you look carefully at my post you'll notice I said "five and six WEEK old pups". It'd be pretty funny sticking my face down in Body's ear to get him to release..lol... Might as well kiss an alligator on the lips! It's nice to hear you had so many great mentors who helped you gain all the knowledge that you share so willingly. We're all are proud of our dogs and our accomplishments, as we should be :)
