will the german shepherd ever get back on top as a police/military dog? - Page 3

The dept I consult for has 5 Mali's and two GS. The best overall dog in dept is GS, but the Mali are super working dogs also.

its a bit of a shame that the german shepherd is being considered second choice to its cousin the malinois.................i am for the whole diversity with the german shepherd....i think its great

but the breediversity shoulod not be enuf reason to not have a strain of shepherds that are still capable of being the top dog in military and k9 units...............

no difference just as a shepherd enthusiast and one of the reasons i and many others are fans of the shepherd besides liking how they look was their ability to be up there along the malinois and dutchie's as the cream of the crop for working military and police k9.

There are those who have gone back to GSDs and there will always be those who prefer them. I believe after all is said and done that many more will gravitate back. A good GSD is a thinking dog and is able to tell the difference in certain situation, where as some of the more hyper breeds are NOT thinkers and just reactors. Not arguing with anyone, just stating what I've seen and believe.

I'm not sure the hint show people are the reason why Mali is more popular in police and military units was a serious one !!!
The work line GSD population is big enough to meet the requirements of police and military should their choice be the GSD, so show people have nothing to do with the decline in demand for the GSD as a police or military dog.
If the reason is not the tight budget then the problem is in the Wl GSD itself, either it is not adapting to the new demands by police and military or the Wl breeders are not breeding good enough working GSDs.

So you Wl breeders and enthusiasts do not blame it on the show people, blame it on yourselves whatever the true reason behind Mali superpassing the GS it's not because of the show ring, there are  enough wl training and testing fields and enough Wl breeders out there, but maybe they're not as good and as dedicated as those of Malis !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the whole "GSD is a thinking dog vs those hyper Malinois!"  In my line of work I want the dog to "react" to my commands and it's training; and perform the task at hand not think about it first.  Actually, I really have little use for a thinking dog but a lot of use for a high drive, highly trainable, strong nerved, easily motivated dog that leaves the thinking to me.   JMO FWIW

The harm to the breed started at the very beginning, it started as a herding dog then it was transformed to a military dog then to a show dog and business was so good that some wanted it to fit all jobs and all markets and we reached to a point where the breed is not best at anything, neither police nor military nor eyesight nor seach and rescue nor nothing ........., I apologize but I had to take it out of my chest, don't think it's my best day ........
