The show people can be blamed a little, because so many Showline dogs windup in police hands and fail, tainting the breed. That's one reason why I would support a clear division in breed name between working and show dogs.

No guddu I think I got it, if show people get involved in Malis they will bring it down and that will help GSD regain its position in police and military.
Seriously I think we should dig deep to understand why GSD is not as it used to be in sight , police, military and so on

dantes,

Might be, but see, Slamdunc is a GSD fellow in heart but when he selects for the welfare of his department he ends up selecting more Malis than Wl GSDs, that says available Malis are better fit for the job than available Wl GSDs, show GSDs are not in the equation here.

This will be heretical ...but it seems that the GSD's are better than mali's on two counts.
1. GSD's are better show dogs
2. GSD's are better companion and family dogs

In every other respect (sport or military/police work), mali's are superior to gsd's, in general.

I took slamdunc's original post as more of a joke, i found it amusing and I didn't think he was really serious. How do people showing dogs limit the number or quality of working dogs available? If show people were to blame you would have to go way before the Martins or Jimmy to assign fault. The requirement of conformation shows are as old as the breed. I am glad those that are defending us are not overcome by nostalgia or are breed blind. For those top tier units currently using Mali's, did GSD's exist in a previous point in time so as to make them superior to the use that the Mal is now being used?

There should be no SL or WL German shepherds....just German Shepherds that can generally perform the tasks they were created for....breeding for anything else hurts the breed. To imply that SL shouldn't be capable to perform because we have WL is a tremendous insult to people who breed SL dogs. If you breed German Shepherds and you have integrity, then you breed working dogs regardless of whether you show them or sport them.

Why are there more Malinois in police/military?  IMO it's price, longevity, health and numbers.

Price - the average price for a working line Malinois is lower than the average price for a working line GSD, from pup prices on up to green adults, to trained adults to titled adults.  The gap used to be a LOT bigger, I remember when quality working Malinois pups were 300-400.00, and titled adults could be bought for 2-4,000, but the Malinois prices have risen over the years in response to the prices people are charging for other breeds.

Longevity - in general the Malinois can hit the streets at a younger age, and work longer, giving a department more bang for their buck.

Health - unfortunately with the overbreeding/uneducated breeding that's happening in Malinois I think this gap is also closing :-( but in general the Malinois is plauged with fewer health issues than the GSD.  For now :-(

Numbers - While there are probably fewer Malinois produced world wide then GSD's, there isn't the large population of dogs bred for show, pet, etc AND the "Malinois" has an entire country of breeders who's main focus is producing police and military dogs.  Holland.  While these dogs are not for the most part purebred Malinois, they are generally lumped in with the Malinois breed, so I don't think you can really seperate them out in these types of discussions.
