I would hate to comment on whether Guddu's contention is
right, that GSDs make better 'Show Dogs' than Malinois do !Teeth Smile

I think that the 'Show' bred versions of both breeds probably do
make better pets than the specifically working lines, of either,
simply because there's a bit less 'edge' bred into both of them.

In the context of this topic, it seems worth repeating that, in the
UK  POLICE service, (don't know about the Army or RAF yet,)  there
are still far more GSDs operational, than Malis.  This seems most
likely to continue, since many police forces breed their own GSDs;
none of these sections yet seem to be breeding Belgians as well, or
instead.  [Unless doing so 'off record' & unregistered].  The Police may
recruit a few Malis from elsewhere, but they have always been willing to
give a chance to other breeds occasionally in the main operational role
anyway.  They also use a variety of breeds for specialist search / sniffer
dogs, but again Malis don't feature there alongside the Spaniels and
Labs.  GSDs still make up the majority of dogs on active police duties.

Gustafson, there was no insult to breeders of SL dogs...just a statement of fact. Please show me a SL kennel that consistently produces high end WORKING dogs. Please don't quote me the fake SchH3 show dogs . I think a quick look on YouTube would prove that those dogs cannot work!

Occasionally a pure Showline will be a capable worker. I saw one last year from Kirschental. But it is rare.

Main reason for the popularity of Malinois or Malinois type dogs with
PD's is the cost and availability of suitable dogs.

Just take a look at what a pedigreed 'average' green GSD is selling
for currently, and what you can pick up an equivalent  Malinois or
Malinois type dog for.

Brokers who go overseas and purchase dogs in lots of 10+ are often
presented with many dogs that are not pedigreed. These dogs are
nornally cheaper because  of that-the dogs may have soft ears, white
markings, missing P1s,  hooked tail etc, usually cosmetic things that
make these dogs less appealing to a purebred fancier.

Another reason, the bulk of the people who claim to be breeding
'Working Dogs' in North America really have no clue what it takes for
a dog to even make it past the first round of testing for K9 selection.
Sure, they may have spent enough time on assorted message boards
to learn some vernacular that allow them to talk a good game online,
but the truth is, most 'breeders' sitting behind their keyboards in North America
hardly know which way to put a fursaver on a dog. There are very
few breeders in this country that get out there and work their dogs,
most simply buy imports or progeny of imports, then start breeding.
They have accomplished nothing outside of training their pet (breeding dogRoll eyes)
to sit, jump on a picnic table etc right there in their own back yard.
Thats a far cry from what even a small town PD wants in a K9 prospect.

i think the fact that mals can be sourced easier, cheaper, can be trained faster, proven superiority in wider roles like detection etc  and have a longer healthier  working life (in general) is also a factor in breed choice. jmo i am not leo.

I was talking to someone from belgium and they said their police force never uses gsds is this true? sad. What does germany use as their police dogs?

Germany is using Malinois as well. There was an article a while a go that said that the German police had complained to the SV about the dogs they produced, mostly show dogs, and they could not get dogs for police work in Germany anymore. They did state that they will go across the border to Holland and get Malinois and Malinois X's for police work.

Hired Dog,

Is the SV also governing the Wl Gernab Shepherds in Germany too?
Why don't the German Police use the Wl type? Why do they go for the Sl?

Ibrahim
