Hired Dog

Ibrahim...I am not a GSD person, I like the breed, I think there are some great dogs out there, but, in my mind, there is, or should be, only ONE GSD. That dog should be able to work and do everything its genetic backround says it should be able to do. Is that reality today, of course not.
The SV is the GSD club in Germany. The malinois out of Holland are easier to get, easier to train, have what it takes for police work, since the KNPV there breeds for that reason, are cheaper, etc. The Israeli IDF, malinois, the US Secret Service, ONLY malinois, most agencies I know of, mostly Malinois...the reasons for this are covered elsewhere in this thread.

how anyone who claims to be a GSD lover and enthusiast let this happen is absolutely crazy.................destroying the legacyh and heritage of one of the great working animals ever........

they have assisted us humans in all kinds of work..........and for now even the germans to turn away from their own breed is nothing short of shameful.................

SV need to rethink what they are doing..............

MONEY Eddie, money. Show dogs cost a lot of money, working dogs, not so much. People go with what makes them the most money, that has been discussed in here. There are no show malinois worth the money that a top show GSD is worth.

The Dutch KNPV program has been there for over 100 years and its got support from the Royal family. It is also heavily managed by the Police...most people see it as just a sport.
It was created to pre-train working police dogs and all working dogs there, except for detection dogs, must pass the KNPV cert before being able to work.
There is really no money there either...the dogs that get certified get sold on the spot at the trial for maybe 5K. Show dogs are worth many times more then that.

Not enough hard core working dogs is probably a good thing.  A strong working dog is my personal preference, but how many are being produced that actually go into working homes, military, or LE.   When a breeder has a litter, of even high quality working line dogs, a number of those puppies usually end up in pet homes.  Hard core, drivey,  dogs often don't do well in pet homes, and some tragedies may result.  Then animal rights groups get involved, etc.  Bad press, breed bans and so forth. It's not the same today as in the 40's and 50's.   So more working dogs "can" mean more publicity and end up being less beneficial to the breed rather than more.  I've never seen any real numbers about the amount of true working dogs being produced versus the actual demand.  How many are actually needed on a yearly basis?

There is no reason a good sound hard working dog can not be a good family dog....now a over the top drivey dog with less nerve than drive....maybe....but I dont personally think they are the embodiment of a working dog for GS.

If being on the top means most common dog GSDs are still in that position for policework in many countries,  also there is differences how a dog for service is used both in military and police I suppose, I doubt a belgium policedog are used the same way as a nordic one for example, with much tracking etc. You may think there should be enough workingline breeders to support GSDs for service, but how many of those breeders have the perfect PSD as a goal? So the availability of GSDs in the right age that are healthy and good enough workingwise may not be that great to rule out other breeds like the malinois.
