SS, I did not say there are not 'legitimate' rescues, but it is an undeniable fact that there are people making a healthy profit on the coat tails those that are legit. I did not invent this fact. I gave another example on another discussion of dogs which were confiscated from a BYB who was turned in by an AKC inspector. Those very same confiscated dogs landed in the breeding kennel of the vet tech who worked for the vet on the case. That vet even certified the dogs for CKC registry. So much for rescue and controlling the 'overpopulation of unwanted dogs....those confiscated dogs went from an AKC high volume breeder to a CKC puppy factory, thanks to the vet who is very active with the humane society. That's only one dinky example of someone making a profit off 'rescued dogs'. Now expand that throughout the country, and the numbers will multiply exponentially.

In all fairness to Joan, Rescue people like Marjorie and Shelley, and those "you" affiliate yourselfs with, "are far and few between".
Many rescues do overlook the real dogs in need of Rescue in favor of those that are "more desirable" for profit.
I have seen it with my own eyes, have spoken with people who call when I have pups that tell me the rescues are ridicules, 7-800 for a "rescue".
There is an old male now,on Facebook that is breaking my heart in California.
There is money to save him, but no one to foster, or take him in.
I said if they get him here, I will foster him.
Not much profit in an old timer.
I recently went to a horse auction. Our "local" horse "rescue" was there, outbidding,'private buyers' for young healthy horses, and letting the meat man buy the skinny, truly in need of rescue horses.
AGAIN, MARJORIE, SHELLEY AND SOME OTHERS, ARE THE EXCEPTION…..

BTW, SS, doesn't your area/county have spay/neuter clinics? My sister had two adult collies and an adult cat neutered/spayed at a local humane society spay/neuter clinic for a total of $115.00 for all three. The neuter for the adult cat was only $25.00 , one microchip from Jeffer's is only $14.99 ( $11.00 each if you buy five or more), cat vac is only $4.95.., 4oz bottle of cat dewormer $3.99 ( which will provide multiple doses, depending on size of cat). That comes to $49.00 for the same things done at the rescue, half the cost you paid.

Yes, the idea of rescue is to have no more homeless dogs but this is not an ideal world. Far from it!!! Humans have major charector flaws, its just human nature, so there will always be homeless and abused animals.

We pulled, boarded, vetted and vetted transported 5 GSDS from california to Holly Hill, SC, that were about to be euthanized. We spent $800 in transport, plus the boarding for 3 weeks and medical expenses (vaccines, KC medication and health certificates). We made NO profit, in fact it COST us money- BIG BUCKS!  We dont get a lot of money for adoptions in the south and almost always operate by the skin of our teeth. Thank God for donors, and the soft soft westlab pharmacy has for dogs- they give our rescue medications at  cost. I reiterate, Rescue is not a money maker... Its just a life saver...Dont even ask about the cost of treating a dog for heartworm...

Joan, yes, there are low cost clinics here affiliated with the shelters. I was talking about what this would have cost me if I'd used my regular veterinarian instead.

by joanro on 05 May 2013 - 17:05

I got that, SS. But talking about the $99. you paid when you adopted, and all that the $99.00 paid for could have been done for $ 49.00 using the resources I listed.

Why on earth are you adding to the population of rescue dogs in an area with a population of only 1800, and a has a GSD rescue only ten miles away?
Also, you didn't answer my question why residents in a city were there is a shortage of adoptable dogs should be called "sorry asses". Seems like they must be doing something right......or maybe they are just shuffling the dogs to another small town in the south which is stretched to the limit , too.

Joan, so the shelter isn't entitled to make some money to cover the cost of utilities, cleaning supplies, laundry, food, etc. etc.??
Their fee without the neutering was only $40.

The humane society closest to me charged an even higher adoption fee, but they are close to a very large urban centre, so their taxes are higher. They are also the provincial (Ontario) SPCA, therefore have a much larger staff that is involved in enforcement and educating the public. And that all COSTS MONEY.

Yes, I see your point about the ridiculously high 'adoption fees', but in NO WAY do I consider what I paid to adopt this cat out of line! Given what a super cat he is, I consider it a BARGAIN!

Sure, I could have picked up some farmer's scruffy, wormy, flea-infested barn kitten for nothing... then paid double or even triple that to get it healthy!

Maybe there was a GSD rescue 10 miles away- but maybe it was full and couldnt take another dog at the time.  That is how one becomes a hoarder- by taking everything, which usually ends up badly for both rescuer and dogs. A rescue has a finite amount of resources and if they want to be able to save lives, they have to work within the resources they have. Dogs are transported across the country because different rescues have openings at different times. Is it better to let a dog die than to transport it? Hell, no.....

by joanro on 05 May 2013 - 20:05

Yes,SS, every one should be paid for their work and time. And Marjorie, keep doing what you're doing, the world is a better place for it.
