Brittany, I doubt you understand how to read a form 990 properly to be qualified to make a value assessment.

Nathan Winograd, what a windbag! Does he ever get to a point? I wonder what... besides whining?

Lesson learned:  Do not rely on a single source of information (i.e. AKC Registered) to make your decision on getting another living thing.   If you do, you are setting yourself up to be disappointed.

Personally, if I am going to pay the price that a "registered" dog goes for, I am going to check out a breeder from every direction possible.  Why is this so hard for people to get?   Do people have so much money to throw away, that they do not do basic leg work to validate who they are giving thousands of dollars to?  If so, I am open to having some of that money thrown at me.

HSUS sounds like a twin to our RSPCA, a self gratifying money making machine, and about as much use as a chocolate teapot when it comes to actually helping animals, and the AKC a kissing cousin to our KC LOL.

At the very least it would seem the kennel clubs should require breed specific health testing and prohibit inbreeding. Yes, I know the crooks will still do what they can do to beat the system, but that doesn't mean that some basic guidelines shouldn't be put in place. If they don't do something soon the quality and health of our purebred dogs is only going to get worse. JMO

Fawn, Most people just don't know any better. I can't tell you how many times a dog owner has proudly told me their dog is a full-blooded (their words, not mine) AKC registered dog with papers!  They think it actually means something very special. Many go on to tell me that they of course are going to breed their dog.  Of course, that is when I get on my soapbox! Lol!

Why should kennel clubs require that?  BREED clubs people, BREED CLUBS!!

VKGSDs, How can the breed clubs help when it is the AKC registering the dogs? I'm asking a sincere question- not being combative.

While there are certainly loads and loads of poorly bred puppies registered every year with AKC, and I do believe money is their top priority, it's worth pointing out that most pet store (puppy mill) pups, at least the ones in my area, do not have AKC papers. Most are APR or CKC.

If the Today show has connections with HSUS, they have lost all credibility in my book.

Forbid this, forbid that! Regulate this, regulate that! There ought to be a law!!!! Point your finger away from your chest towards others. Let's live in safe golden cages. Let's others make up our mind for us.  Sieg Heil!!! Goose stepping on. Where is karma in that?
What about personal responsibility!!!??? What about doing your own research into pedigrees and dogs used. See or find out how they are kept. What they produce. What about blame your self instead of others. What happened to: Vote with your dollars after you do research. What about:  Ask thousands of people and then make up your mind? What about,.... go see for your self. You want organization like :AKC  ( or other such organizations)  do that for you? Are you serious?! Are you sheep?

If we lived in a perfect world no regulations would ever be necessary for much of anything, but that isn't the case. I think we need to do something for the sake of our dogs. They have no voice. For every breeder who truly cares about breeding healthy dogs, there are thousands who don't care and do it strictly for the money. They are never going to join a breed club or do health testing. They'll just pump out the puppies and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. The SV has their requirements. Has it been such a bad thing? I think not.
