My favorite breeders from work line are those who produce dogs with correct conformation and breed to the stand as a whole, and my favorite breeders from show line are those who breed good temperament and dogs able to work and breed to the standard as a whole. Breeders who interest me are those breeders who outcross show/work with a vision.

No Jim, by fearless I mean COWARDS, we don't need cowards in the breed, do we?
Base of defensive drive as I learned is self preservation, a bit different from plain fear !!

Jim, as you mentioned Walter Martin in another thread, in an interview he said breeding nice dogs with the same for three generations breeder will start getting too nice dogs not ready to work or run in the field, so in every three generations one should bring in an "idiot" . He maintaned balance in his dogs, that is part of correct temperament.

Ibrahim, the GSD was created to be a working dog, not a companion dog, there are breeds specifically bred for that role.  Although I like a dog that deals well with children, its not a requirement of a working dog that it must.
There is no dog alive that can distinguish a "real" threat from a "non real" one...hence the reason we shake hands with a friend when ours or his TRAINED dog is around and we dont hug.

Mr Engel
Indeed fear is the foundation for all defense, but, defense must be brought out carefully, in a MATURE dog that has been taught the mechanics of prey work and can bite well in prey. The dog must also never get pushed so far in defense that we risk shutting it down...needles to say a great helper is needed for that type of training, but, thats for another thread.

Hired dog, I do not say that a GSD is meant to only be a companion, what I wanted to say is a GSD that does not make a good reliable companion is of non-correct temperament.
I strongly think a GSD of correct temperament should be safe around children, if not then that is not correct temperament. Who needs a dog that is known for good probability of hurting a child !!

In the book, working dogs, the study was how to mix working and show line gsd's to improve conformation of the working lines and also to improve the working ability of show lines.

in the end, after 3 or 4 generation, they had a show with a german judge, and the mixed dogs were mostly V rated, and also had excellent abilities to work. maybe it's something we can all consider.........pretty dogs can work and working dogs can be pretty. the challenge for breeders to consider is the whole dog an not just on or two aspects.

When you (anyone who does) say the GSD is a working dog, do you mean

1. A GSD is not supposed to be shown?
2. A GSD is not suitable as a companion?
3. A owner who wants a companion should exclude GSD from his/her list?

I understand a working dog, a dog that is capable and has the capacity and genetics to be trained and put to actual service but can and should make a good companion/guard naturally. I understand it also includes being 100% safe for human use and service, including not hurting its owner + his/her family and innocent people, children above all.
