gustav,
i have to agree, the modern conformation of show dogs has been exaggerated. a few show line breeders in the USA do not believe that following the trend is the way to go. Some believe that a gsd MUST have the conformation to be beautiful AND to do work.

a dog that is all work OR a dog that is all show............IMO is an abomination of what the breed should be.

I think a couple of you wouldn't know a German Shepherd Dog if one bit you in the ass.

Please, let's be respectful! Jim Engel has been around GSDs longer than most of us have been alive, and I respect his knowledge even if I don't agree with everything he says.

I just fininshed watching a "Dogs With Jobs" episode that featured a police K9 named Brix. I had a hard time figuring out Brix's ancestry. He MIGHT have been one of the less extreme German showlines, or he might have been a showline-working line cross. From certain angles, he even could have passed for one of the less angulated American showlines (GASP!!)

This dog goes home at the end of the day, and play's with the officer's young children. They climb all over him, brush him, pet him, play ball with him, etc, and he enjoys it, just like any PET GSD!

Yes, some dogs (of ANY breed) are not safe with children. But I personally believe the working line dogs are going in the wrong direction. Too many of them have been bred for ball drive, and the other things people want for the sport of schutzhund, and they are no longer balanced or stable. There is a very good reason the GSD is no longer the dog of choice for the Seeing Eye, or other medical service dog jobs, and that boils down to mainly one thing: TEMPERAMENT.

The dogs of the '60's had it. Today's dogs don't. You can agree with me or not, but I feel we have lost something that was very important to this breed.

. The. Mindset of someone like Jim Engle does absolutly NOTHING to try to rectify anything.
He is going to write a totally, one sided, biased book.
Everyone does not,nor will they ever have complete agreement on the breed, but do you think he is showing Ny respect or consideration for those of us on the otherr side of this divide?
I happen to love my dogs, and take GREAT pride in them, I have put a great deal of time, effort and money into my dogs, which BTW, are not all showlines.
I try very hard to conform and stick within the standard.
WHY would I suggest anyone that

Why would I want to suggest,or direct anyone interested in learning about the breed to either read his book,or even come here, where my devotion is going to be cast off by long time, respected people as not worth anything more than raising Gerbils?
I believe you got to give respect before you get respect.
I know, a few of the posters here have a real sense of humor, when it comes to the showline dogs.
I myself. Fail to feel a grat bit of the humor.
I am not the only one that feels like this either, I talk to quite a few people I have met here.
And,it becomes totally hypocritical when. The "All aboard the working train" advertise and sell pups to....wait for it....PET HOMES....Ring a bell to any of the anti pet/anti Shepherds for kids people.
I guess I don't have the right temperment for this...

respect or pandering?

by Blitzen on 17 December 2013 - 22:12

I thought Engel was a Bouvier expert? Has GSD's too?

by vk4gsd on 17 December 2013 - 22:12

blitzen, kitkat..... - keep this up and you won't be getting a signed copy for christmass.

by Blitzen on 17 December 2013 - 22:12

Why would I want one unless it's about GSD's? I don't know this person at all, just asking if he has GSD's and Bouviers. Do YOU know?

by vk4gsd on 17 December 2013 - 22:12

i think mainly a bouv guy, but why ask me when you can ask the man himself. the internet has taken it's toll on my attention span and made me too dumb to read a whole book so i doubt i will get a copy, no offence to the work of the author.
