Thanks again, Irina. I love looking at these videos. I would never have seen them if not for you.

How did your females do?

by bzcz on 16 September 2014 - 18:09

Thank you for making the time and the effort to do all the video taping and putting it all together for us.

The work needs to be done correctly.  It is supposed to be an attack on the handler.  The dogs should be free heeled to the blind, not towards it, and the helper should come at the handler not a prey bite run away off to the side.

There was one Bad Boll dog that the handler left the line and heeled to the blind.  He did it right.  The helper came at the dog and it was a nice job.  They can do it correctly. There was one helper who was coming towards the dogs instead of the prey bite away.  He was also doing it right.

Now it's the judges turn.  V51, V67, V68 (I only watched a  few of the videos so far), should have never made pronounced.  The judges need to show some integrity and when a dog is weak, they need to label it correctly.  Their failure to do so is what weakens the breed.  It's not hard to see the problems.  The crowd sees them and you can hear it in the collective noise that they make.

It all starts with the judge.  If they won't call a dog sufficient or insufficient, then how is someone who wasn't there supposed to know?

The judges need to be held accountable and enough of this separate rating system for the SL dogs.

I don't usually post here and do my damnest to stay out of the bickering that goes on here on a daily basis. I am going to say something however that is more than likely to upset those of you who watched the videos.

After observing these videos I have no doubt in my mind now as to why the German Polizei as well as most European countries L/E and military have gone exclusivly to the Malinois as a working dog. As a PSD trainer and handler for 34 years I wouldn't trust 99.9% of those dogs tested to serve  in any L/E or military role. If this is what you call breed worthy may "He" help us all!!

The workability of our breed has been declining for many years and has not been addressed by the SV as the world’s leading Club with any real determination. When I look at the Shutzdienst and reflect that all of these animals being tested must have achieved Sch H 3 status I can only conclude that many of them have bought their qualifications. The performances that we see today cannot in any way reflect that before the top grade they must have passed the BH, Sch 1 and 2 before being awarded Sch H 3.

The biting exercise is only one part of the Schutzhund Tests and does not reflect the overall working ability of any animal. With this in mind I would like to see that all the dogs who can possibly finish in, say, the top thirty places should be required to carry out a full Schutzhund re-test within two months before the Sieger Show. The marking should be severe and any dog not achieving overall above average marks be denied entry to the show. Any dog at the show displaying poor work following top marks at the pre show test should then place their koermaster or judge under scrutiny.

I also think that because the working qualifications are pretty slack it has encouraged and rewarded a poor level of training ability within the breed.

I agree with Deacon and I hink MacKenzie's idea has merit.

Something different needs to be done, because what they are doing now isn't working.  Dogs coming off of the sleeve and dogs leaving the helper should never be judged pronounced.  Ever.

by Blitzen on 17 September 2014 - 12:09

The first important SV show I attended was NASS in 2005. The same quality of judging the protection work prevailed there too. Dog falling off the sleeves getting the same pronounced as those dogs that didn't.

What the breed needs is real radical thinking that is positive in addressing all of the problems in the GSD.  It doesn't matter how positive the thinking may be when expressed on this database unless it is presented and embraced by the decision makers in the SV and acted upon.  Historically the SV ignores everything contributed by anyone outside of Germany.  Auslanders have no say even when holding a membership of the SV for many years.

Whatever problem comes up the SV says we have no problems in Germany.
