I would say very dark sable.... in the picture of him at 6 weeks... there is a hint of sable along his back.

If you want a confirmed opinion of his color, I suggest you post several new good clear pictures of him plus if possible some good clear pictures of his parents, this way you make it easier for us to tell his true color, at this point we are guessing, any of above replies might be correct or wrong !!

Pluck a guard hair from his back and see if it's agouty.

Looking back in the pedigree, all the dogs are black/tan or black/red. From a genetic standpoint, I don't see any dogs that could produce black or sable as there are no blacks or sables in the last 7+ generations. Personally, I'd suspect a false pedigree. Even if some of those dogs could be considered sable, lets be honest, no sable showline mating produces dogs that are this dark.

Do you have pics of the dad?

Lift his tail and take a pic. Genetic blacks with bleeding will be black under the tail. Other colors will be light. He certainly looks just like I'd expect his sister to have looked early on...very cute.

Are you able to post some current pics from the side, the pup stacked? Pedigree and pup don´t seem to fit.

Either way, it´s a cutie

Color aside, that pup doesn't look anything like his supposed lineage. That looks like your average working line pup.

GSD Lineage

Ibrahim, certainly it is unique color, quite dark, but not quite sable. Funny that the ears look stronger at 6 weeks than at "most recent", but that pose could be the reason.
The tight clean straight front feet/legs I love! Sable pups are said to be at their lightest when young like 6 weeks, and that is when this one looks solid Jet black. I hope StormGSD posts more information and Images! Teeth Smile

Ibrahim Said: GSD Lineage, 1st picture suggests he's solid black with bleed through or with some silver hairs. But if you look at 2nd picture, the blurry one color is clear sable, my opinion. His mother looks a light sable to me with pattern, would be nice to see pup's pedigree to make sure.

Thanks guys.  I will try to take some more photos.  I do not have any photos of the dad.

I do have his AKC research pedigree and am in the process of getting the certified copy.

But I looked through his research ped and no dog is listed as sable.

What are you guys thinking? do I need to be concerned

Here is his research pedigree:

And here is a sort of to the side photo with him in the background behind my true black GSD:

That pedigree is such an "everything but the kitchen sink" it's really tough to say what COULD be back there.

Almost looks like he's just got a lot of bleeding, as you sometimes seen in American line blacks. I bet he continues to lighten as he ages.

GSDLineage, one thing I'll disagree with you slightly on is the age of 6 weeks for sables to be at their lightest. I have not seen that- I see mine at their lightest between about 8-9weeks at earliest, right up to when their adult guard hairs start coming in.

Storm, I don't know how you acquired this cutie, but I'm really curious to see Dad and also what this pup has under his tail and also underbelly area.
