I guess that HiredDog and i are the odd ones out!! My question would be why do you breed? What are your breeding program goals? If the dog is sound in temperament, structurally correct, healthy, good Hips and elbows, shows a desire to work and and willingness to learn, then what is the hesitancy? Will this dog aid in bettering the GSD?

I can tell you from personal experience, I have an UGLY dog!!! And i think that is why he is so fast and powerful. He knows he is ugly, so he gives just a little more in the activities to give me a reason to continue to bring him home with me :)

I personally  think both dogs pictured are very attractive. If the dog has the temperamant you are looking for, go for it.

agree Jenni and I will breed what I want, just surprized by the opposition I get when I want to breed such dog

Ex riedstern is probably somewhere back there Wink Smile

I personally think a reverse mask is hideous, and I don't want it.  That said, if it doesn't bother you, the dog is strong and complements your female, why wouldn't you?  The people that don't want a reverse mask just won't buy from the litter

Just a note, I think a better description of such a mask would be maskless not reverse. While some think it is nice others don't. However a breeder is free to breed what he wants. A good reason to breed to such dog in my opinion would be the wish to have certain traits that are ONLY available in that specific dog. OP question was wish to breed to a "strong" male, well there are far better looking males who are as strong or maybe stronger than this one, so why not look for a better looking one that is strong? Is there anything in that male that is not available in better looking ones?

The fact you posted shows there are doubts/conflicting opinions and such, so why not find a dog that does not raise such doubts/conflicting opinions, and has nothing to worry about? At your place there are plenty of good dogs, if you were in a place with limited options it would be understandable, but you are in Czech, heart of Europe !!!

Ibrahim, in fact there are qualities in this dog and bloodline that are hard to find in better looking dogs, IMO it is a problem to put looks before quality, most will do it, I will not, I posted the question, not because I am in doubt , but because I am surprized by reactions on my choice, and wonder if other people would let general opinion direct their breedingchoices

so my question was  "what would you do ", not should a change my mind Wink Smile

I personally bred litter with these reversed masks and would say it is exeptional litter as well in healthresults, and temperament/caracter, so I want to preserve that, in fact there was a stunning black sable in the litter too, also IPO3 hips and elbows clear, people say, use that one if you want that bloodline

the dark sable, still being a great dog is the least exeptional in the litter, so for me, not the one to breed to

I understand now and trust your knowledge to choose what best suits your program and needs, I have no objection.

As per that mask alone (not taking into account other traits) I don't like it.

by duke1965 on 04 May 2015 - 21:05

respect your honesty Ibrahim, most likely there will be one or two pups in the litter who look like that Wink Smile

I also think the two dogs pictured are attractive. Sometimes I see a reverse mask that I do not like, but these two look good to me. Overall, if I like the dog's working ability, I do not care about the color.
