HEY: the narriator on Animal Planet just said a wolf travels about l mile in 5 minutes. WOW; that is covering some ground... Huh....Nan

by joanro on 19 December 2015 - 01:12

And Iditarod teems complete 1,100 miles in 8 days ..... break that down ( approximately 137 miles per day), and add in the weight of the sled carrying supplies and the musher. During the race there are mandatory check points, with three mandatory layovers including one 24 hour lay over.

Nans, that's only about 12 mph...I've clocked my dogs doing that from the four wheeler.

Sorry I hit the wrong button;  OK I have clocked my guy faster than that also;  I will try to re do his mph along with getting pic's.  Will post if I can get that for you all.  Know we clocked him full speed about 20  MPH with no problems at all.  But will check again.  Nan

PS:  HIs american show gate was clocked at about 9 mph.   But that has been quite a while ago, he's a big boy now.  Will also redo this and try to get current mph on both show gate and a running gate.  Trotting gate also.

I thought we are talking about the speed of "trotting gait" only ?
There is no difference between humans and animals - on a SHORT distance they are fast, but the longer the distance, the more they have to slow down.

I know nothing about sled dogs, so I googled...

Short track with a distance of 10 - 20 km : average speed 20 - 25 m/h or 32 - 40 km/h
Long track with a distance of 100 + km : average speed 10 - 14 m/h or 16 - 23 km/h

Medium distance somewhere between

I guess it´s difficult to compare sleddogs to German Shepherd dogs.
On a "short track" sleddogs will gallop for sure if possible, on the other hand on a "long track" they won´t have "easy" terrain - and they are trained differently ( I just read a well trained sleddog "makes" up to 10.000 km / 6.200 miles during one season...

Nans, I´d be interested in the distance your dog trotted at 20 m/h, and if he really was trotting "only", without any jumps inbetween.

Susie, sled dogs trot mostly, are around 50 pounds.
Nans, 12 mph is steady for uphill, not full speed.

This is so far from the theme of the thread that it should be on another thread.

Thanks a bunch to the hijackers.
