I am trying to learn everything that I can about my dogs pedigree. I still have to add her to the database. I can look up titles. I was just wondering how do you know when a dog is asl, wgsl, or any of the working lines?

I am relatively sure she has czech from her mothers side. And I know that the dad is sl's. But not sure as to which, or if both. And is mom just czech, or is there ddr and such, as well?

Sorry, I am in the learning process.

Pedigrees are like looking at swimsuit model photos of women in the SI swimsuit issue and predicting which model is smartest, most athletic, and which woman is Miss congeniality. Dogs are most like their dam and sire ... Pedigrees are used to sell dogs to newbies and people with too much money.

Post the pedigree and we'll help decipher it for you :)

Bubba is partially correct, but it's not to say that pedigrees cannot be very predictive if studied by experienced people. Of course, you need to find out if the dog is typical of it's bloodlines. They are far more useful in breeding (in terms of predictability) than they are in just guessing what your dog might be like, ie, certain dogs are known in GENERAL to produce certain traits.

Yeah dogs are most like their dam and sire who are most like their dam and sire who are most like their dam and sire......AKA a pedigree analysis.

Bubba is an angry failed breeder.

The easy way is to ask but I suggest it is better to look in depth at the orgs and familiarise yourself with the main dogs and lines and pretty quick you will see patterns.

Its pretty easy to do these days. In fact the types are often so well defined you can accurately guess to a decent margin of error what the lines are just by looking at pics of ancestors, eg pigment, roach, gait, structure....

The sire is Luzaks Who You Gonna Call. The dam is Sable Mae Seckler of Salem Sunset. Nothing was done with my dogs parents. They werent even in the database. I want to do something with mine.

I am going to try and take a good photo of my Nova this weekend and then add her.

Better a has been than a never been vk4gsd. No two puppies from the same dam and sire are alike. First look at the dog in the flesh and then look at the pedigree. If you are like most pedigree philosophers you won't even know what you are looking at or what to do with it. All the good breeding and pedigree BS can't keep idiots from screwing up a perfectly good dog. To the OP ... if you like your dog and your dog likes you then the pedigree does not matter.

If you own a companion dog (sport, play, whatever) or in fact you are a LEO k9 handler then all that matters is what's on the end of the leash.

If you are a responsible breeder than in depth knowledge of the pedigrees of the sire and dam is imperative.

It is totally irresponsible to suggest otherwise.

Bubbabooboo It matters to me because I am interested in learning about all things GSD. My dog, imo, is awesome (but dont we all feel that way about our dogs? Lol)...Nova has given me something to study, and learn about, and possibly be a hobby for me. She has given me a purpose.

Enter the dogs pedigree and some of the "Good" people on here will try to help you. It is usually easy to determine working lines from show lines, and DDR lines will have dogs with breed books DDR, Czech will have CMKU or CKSP, etc.
As for the other attributes, they are only guesses, but many on here know what many of the lines produce. If you need help entering the pedigree, send me a PM.
