Kalibeck

An imageMy handsome boy Beckett is failing. Saturday he suddenly had a huge lump under the callus (which we had been applying petroleum jelly to) on his left elbow. Saturday night it ruptured, draining mostly old blood & serum. I cleaned it up & put a dressing on for protection. Told hubby we need to make a vet appointment for Monday. The wound was nice & clean, & Beckett had no fever. However, he would not eat. Not even peanut butter, his favorite. Managed to get him to take a little vanilla ice cream, that’s it. Now, this evening, he can no longer support his backend. He’s had right hip dyplasia since he was OFA’d at 3yo & they declined his hip certification, but it only started bothering him about 2 years ago. We tried the glucosamine supplements with no improvement, but had better luck with Phycox. Since the weather has been so cold, he has really started to limp. Understandable, I am too. But this afternoon he fell, & couldn’t get up. We rolled him over, & he was able to struggle up to sit. As he was sitting, he was incontinent of stool. He looked SO distressed. He had just been out & pottied. We helped him up, & half carried, half drug him to his bed, where he was incontinent again. After cleaning him up twice, he was miserable, sore, & still oozing stool. So, I’ll have to ask the vet to see him tomorrow. He’s an old man, nearly blind; & he’s been loved & led a comfortable life. I can’t allow him to suffer & live an undignified life, or let him develop infections.... You know where this is going. I won’t be sleeping much tonight. 😭

We don’t need anything but prayers. I hope he’ll be brighter in the morning. He’s crated tonight, for safety. My 2 girls still think they, & everyone else, are puppies at 9 years old. Poor Beckett doesn’t need any rough-housing. I hope he is brighter in the morning, but we still need the vet visit. My vet is wonderful, but she is a realist. 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻.

I hope you can take some measure of comfort in the knowledge that you are doing your pal a favour and releasing him from his failing body.
