Zeliaskye

by Zeliaskye on 08 November 2019 - 18:11

So i'm going to talk about something that is a touchy subject...….. Non standard colors. Primarily blue and liver. I have seen more lately cropping up. Mostly blues in show lines and livers in the working lines. So that being said I'm researching and compiling a list of dogs who do or potentially do carry for these colors. With the genetic testing available now many people are able to avoid them but back in the day they couldn't. I've Noticed for example That Pike von der Schafbachmuhle is prevalent in a lot of the lines that have produced livers. Or that Ursus von Batu is in a lot of lines that have produced blue. It piqued my interest and so im coming to all of you to see if anyone can help me add to my list? I understand this is a sore subject and they are not dogs that are to standard so please don't crucify me for asking.

Thanks!

I really don't understand why it would be a sore subject. I applaud your interest and willingness to research.

it's a disqualifying color. and deemed so by pretty serious GSD folks a long time before we got here. so I'm sure they had reasons for avoiding them.

but it's not mega-e or crippling hip, elbow or spine issues or a dozen other issues that can be named that affect, end or shorten the life of the GSD.

but, Ursus is in so many winning GSL, good luck pinning it on him.Teeth Smile

just stirring the pot,

Rik

I've seen quite a few people get really upset so I just wanted to be careful in how I went about this. To me it's very interesting to see where they are just randomly showing up in lines so I'm trying to stick with dogs who have indeed produced it or are known carriers. Like you said Ursus is everywhere and even Pike is in a lot of pedigrees. So far this is my list.

Blue Show line:
Filius von Dahlener land
Xarko vom haus miller
Vac Vagvolgyi Zolo

Blue working line:
Aria vom Eisenherz
Como vom bonauer wald
Orlanda vom wallerhorst

Liver Show line:

Liver Working line:
Pike von der Schafbachmuhle?
Bruno vom Midlicher Land
Hexe vom Hufeisenberg
Irck de la hutte du berger
Honda von der Kleinen birke
Ike vom Teufelshang
Quba von den wannaer hohen
Iron von den Wolfen

all I can say is, this is your interest, something you are investing time and research in that concerns the GSD on a GSD forum and if you stick around long enough you will see there are lots of variations and lots of opinions on the GSD.

you going to have to develop a thick skin or you will soon get r-u-n-n-o-f-t.

Zeliaskye: have you read through the recent thred about "Breeding a Blue Mali" ? I know it is about a Belgian Shepherd, ostensibly, but there is quite a lot of discussion / information on there about the Dilute Colours in the GSD.  I suggest you also look at the White Shepherd Forum, and run a site search on the Epilepsy topic, which will give you a wider picture of the history of, and issues around, Blues and other non-Standard colour coats.  This won't help much with your assessment of current modern bloodlines in the States and Germany, but will give you some background in the subject.

This website has a HUGE database of dogs that carry for liver, blue and white: http://www.angelfire.com/wi/birkenbaum/

Also, I suggest you do a search here on the subect-- there have been several lengthy threads about colors over the years, and you'll find additional dogs known to have produced blues and livers.

Zeliaskye you can ask whatever you like please do not think you will be crucified, Admin will no longer allow that kind of thing to go on. In the past you are correct it may well have got very heated but not now. So you can feel comfortable knowing we will not allow the discussion get out of hand.
